...September Heat Wave Continues...

Birmingham's high yesterday was 94 degrees, exactly ten degrees above
normal, but 8 degrees below the record high for the September 19 (102 in
1931). Hot weather will headline our forecast again today with ample
sunshine and temperatures well above 90 degrees in most spots this
afternoon. We will introduce the risk of a few isolated showers late this
afternoon thanks to a weak front approaching from the north, but warm air
aloft should keep most towns dry.
Any showers for the rest of the week will be isolated, as the main action
stays well to the south in the Gulf of Mexico. Afternoon temperatures will
back off slightly during the latter half of the week, but will remain above
normal.

RITA: The system should will be a strengthening hurricane by the time it
reaches the Florida Keys tonight, possibly a major hurricane.
The latest forecast track from NHC shows landfall along the Texas coast,
just southwest of Galveston, early Saturday. There is a chance Rita could
be a dangerous storm at the time of landfall since the oceanic heat content
is very high, especially over the western Gulf of Mexico which has been
pretty much untouched by tropical systems so far this season.

At this time it looks like Rita will stay well to the south of the central
Gulf coast, but could stir up some large swells and dangerous rip tides.

PHILIPPE: The other hurricane in the Atlantic basin is moving northward over
open water, and should be east of Bermuda by Saturday. This system is no
threat to the U.S. mainland.

TIDBITS: Alabama's hot spot yesterday was Mobile with 97 degrees. Pinson and
Montgomery reached 96. Fall officially begins Thursday of this week at 5:23
p.m.
