...Rampaging Rita...

GOOD MORNING: Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Southwest
Louisiana and the Upper Texas Coast. Rita is very reminiscent of
devastating Hurricane Audrey, which inundated Cameron Parish in June 1957,
killing over 500 people. Hopefully, the excellent response from the public
will mean a limited loss of life.

RITA: Rita is inland he hurricane moved inland over Cameron Parish last
even and is continuing north northwest along the Texas/Louisiana border.
The storm is expected to grind to a halt over eastern Texas and western
Louisiana during the next 24 hours. It may dump up to 25 inches of rain,
which could result in extraordinary inland flooding. We will be sorting our
reports today, but there will likely be a catastrophic surge into Cameron
and Calcasieu Parishes in Southwest Louisiana. Hopefully, excellent
preparations will limit the loss of life in the hurricane area. Luckily,
the huge metro area of Houston and vulnerable Galveston dodged a big bullet.

IMPACT HERE: Rita is a long way from Alabama, but the outer feeder bands
from this large storm will impact Alabama today. There could be some strong
thunderstorms associated with those feeder bands. We can't even rule out
the possibility of a tornado or two, so pay attention to later weather
information today. Storms could also dump heavy rain in a short period of
time, although flooding is not a concern for now.

Alabama will stay in a moist southeasterly flow for the next couple of days
as the hurricane weakens to a depression and stalls. We will have mostly
cloudy skies and scattered storms.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama meets Arkansas a 11:30 Saturday in Tuscaloosa
and Western Kentucky will be at Auburn for a 1:30 game. Both games are
subject to showers and thunderstorms in the area, especially at Tuscaloosa.
Game time temperatures will be in the 83 to 86 range.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Hurricane Eloise made landfall during the morning
hours between Fort Walton Beach and Panama City with an 18 foot storm surge.
