...Rita Heads for the Texas Coast...

Historic hurricane Rita is headed for the upper Texas coast with the
potential for catastrophic damage and widespread misery.

Last night the storm became the third most intense hurricane on record in
the Atlantic basin when the pressure dipped below 900 millibars. The only
hurricanes stronger than Rita: Gilbert in 1988 (888 mb), and the Labor Day
hurricane of 1935 (892 mb).

Sustained winds are in the vicinity of 165 mph with gusts over 200 mph. Rita
is expected to peak in intensity this morning, but the weakening process is
expected to be very slow, and the latest NHC forecast calls for Rita to be a
category four at the time of landfall, much like Katrina.

The latest NHC track has Rita moving into the Texas coast near Freeport late
Friday night. This would inundate Galveston Island with a storm surge that
could exceed 20 feet, and create significant damage across the Houston
metropolitan area. Rainfall amounts of 15 inches or more are likely, and
there is some risk Rita could stall out over east Texas this weekend. That
could lead to severe and widespread flooding if it happens.

Isolated tornadoes will be possible on Saturday over east Texas and a large
part of Louisiana.

THE ALABAMA STORY: At the moment it looks like the bulk of the moisture from
Rita will remain to the west and north of Alabama for the next five to seven
days. A few isolated afternoon showers are possible over the next few days,
but the chance of any one spot getting wet is so small we have not mentioned
it in the forecast.

BAD AIR: A code orange air quality alert remains in effect today for
Birmingham.

FALL ARRIVES: The autumnal equinox is this afternoon at 5:23 p.m. CDT.
