...Rita Stays Well South of Alabama...

The same upper air high that has been keeping Alabama hot and dry will keep
hurricane Rita well to the south of the state during the next few days. That
is a good thing since Rita should become an extremely dangerous storm,
possibly reaching category four or five on the Saffir-Simpson scale within
the next 36 hours.

The latest track from the National Hurricane Center projects landfall on the
Texas Gulf coast just north of Matagorda Bay Friday night. However, we
stress all of the Texas coast remains at risk, especially the upper half of
the coast. This includes Freeport and Galveston. Rita has a chance to be
just as strong as Katrina at the time of landfall, and significant damage
and flooding is likely along and to the right of the point of landfall.
Mandatory evacuations begin in Galveston this morning. People in medical
centers and nursing homes will start evacuating at 6 a.m., while residential
evacuations begin at 6 p.m.

The NHC track takes the circulation into central Texas, keeping the moisture
well to the west of Alabama. We are hoping some of the moisture will get
caught up in westerly winds aloft over the central U.S., bringing moisture
and some needed rain to our state by the middle of next week.

SEPTEMBER HEAT: Montgomery was the hottest spot in the state yesterday with
97 degrees. Birmingham's high was 95 degrees, over ten degrees above normal
for the date. Down in the Florida panhandle, Panama City soared to 98
degrees. That was actually two degrees cooler than Monday's high in Panama
City when the mercury reached 100.

A CHILL IN THE AIR: In contrast to our hot weather, the low yesterday
morning was 18 degrees at Bondurant, Wyoming.
