ALL EYES TURN SOUTHWARD: It is all about Rita who had grown into a
category 2 hurricane this afternoon while passing westward through the
Florida straits. She will be our main story for the rest of the week and
well into the weekend.

We should say up front that there is little danger of her affecting
the Alabama coast other than pulling in some moisture from the Gulf of
Mexico producing some scattered showers and storms. The latest official
track forecast continues her westward across the heart of the Gulf and
making landfall very early Saturday morning somewhere on the Central Texas
coast. At this point, we need to turn on a yellow caution light and we all
know why. That many days down the road cannot be sealed in stone. However,
most of the other tropical models agree that landfall will not be on the
Alabama, Mississippi or Louisiana coast. Rita should become a major
hurricane as she continues westward.

BACK HOME IN CENTRAL ALABAMA: While we cannot say that there is
absolutely no chance of rain through Saturday, we believe the possibility is
so small that we took it out of the forecast. It is going to be hot again
tomorrow with highs some 8 to 10 degrees above normal peaking in the low to
mid 90s. Highs should back off a few degrees by the end of the week.

100 DEGREES IN PANAMA CITY: It happened yesterday. That was not
only their hottest temperature all summer, but it was the hottest ever
recorded in the entire month of September breaking the old record of 98 on
September 2, 1989. Tallahassee had 99, which was also their hottest of the
year. Alabama is sharing in the heat too. Today will be the 14th day this
month with 90 or hotter in Tuscaloosa and the 13th such day in Anniston.
Tuscaloosa has received a mere 0.07 rainfall all month.

OUR NEXT RAIN: If Rita goes into Texas, some of the models point
her northward toward Ft. Worth-Dallas while others curve her around toward
the NE over NW Arkansas. If that happens, there is a chance we could get
some showers around Monday. We will keep our fingers crossed.

WINDING DOWN: USA extremes in the last 24 hours included 107 in
Death Valley and 24 in Big Piney, Wyoming...well over an inch of rain in the
last 24 hours in such locations as Indianapolis, St. Louis and Springfield,
Illinois...here in Alabama, it was a cool 56 in DeSoto State Park this
morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: To bed at 1:00 a.m. and up at 6:00.
After working a bit, I decided to go back to my good old king-sized bed and
take a one hour power nap. Not to be. 22 seconds after hitting the bed, I
heard a big kerplunk. Little Miss Molly had landed right in the middle of
the bed with her favorite softball in her mouth. She came racing up to me
and stuck the ball under the edge of my pillow, then stood on my chest
looking me square in the eye. As I looked up into those persuasive little
eyes, I became powerless. So, I had my second getting up of the morning, got
dressed, played with Molly for 30 minutes and went on a walk. Do not ever
know what the walk will be like. Only 18 seconds into the walk, I heard a
loud fluttering. A large bird as big as a crow, but not a crow, took off
only five feet from Molly and I. She almost climbed the wooden fence trying
to catch I.t. I got jerked around quite a bit.
