A NAIL-BITING WEEK AHEAD: And it is all due to Miss Rita. She was
growing stronger this afternoon. It looks like her future track will be
westward passing near Key West later Tuesday and then entering the Gulf of
Mexico where she should become a major hurricane. We do not think Alabama
will need to worry about Rita, but it is going to be a watch and wait for
other parts of the Gulf Coast. The most favored landfall now is on the upper
Texas coast, possibly near Galveston Saturday morning. As we all know, a
forecast of a land-falling hurricane five days in advance is not sealed in
stone, so there is some risk that the Louisiana coast and possibly even the
Mississippi coast could be hit. Already there are mandatory evacuation
orders for the Florida Keys.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Philippe was 365 miles east of the Leeward
Islands and not expected to bother the USA. The National Hurricane Center is
also watching a disturbed weather area midway between Africa and the Lesser
Antilles. Upper level winds are not very favorable.
THE CONDITION OF THE GULF OF MEXICO: Water temperatures in the Gulf
have recovered to near ideal conditions that hurricanes like. While not
quite as warm as they were for Katrina, early this afternoon the temperature
ranged from 85 to 86. In fact, the coolest temperature was 84-about 75 miles
south of Dauphin Island.
DISASTER AREA WEATHER: While it is mostly dry, temperatures are
really uncomfortable for hurricane recovery work along the Gulf Coast. High
temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday in places like Bayou LaBatre, Gulfport,
Biloxi and New Orleans will be near 95 degrees. In places, the heat index
could top 105.
PROWLING AROUND THE COUNTRY: 107 in Wink, Texas was the hottest in
the USA yesterday...coldest this morning was 21 in West Yellowstone, Mont.,
which was 11 degrees colder than Alaska's cold spot-good old Deadhorse with
33...some drier air pushed into NE Alabama over the weekend, so it was a lot
cooler over the extreme north and NE than it was elsewhere. For example, the
low in DeSoto State Park this morning was 51, 14 degrees cooler than
Birmingham.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I had to neglect Little Miss Molly so
much over the weekend, that I decided that she could be the total boss on
our early morning walk. Did not think I would ever get home. That half-mile
trek took forever. She had so much she wanted to see and examine. She always
stops at Jo-Jo's bathroom (which is a tree that Jo-Jo uses). Even though
Molly has already done her business by then, she insists on stopping,
heisting her leg like a boy dog and at least doing a little bit. On the way
back, she heard Jo-Jo bark from his back porch. She whined like a child who
had his toy taken away. She is still deeply in love. She would have married
Jo-Jo, but we took away Molly's privilege of having little puppies as soon
as we got her. I sure would like to know what they would have been like..I
often wonder what the world looks like to Molly. She is only 6 inches tall.
I had a green shirt on so I am sure I looked like the Jolly Green Giant and
the Old Crow Motel must look like a giant Redwood tree. She heads for safety
when we start the vacumn cleaner. That must appear as a giant Sherman tank.
