GOOD AFTERNOON: Heading over to Atlanta today to watch my beloved Atlanta
Braves take on the San Diego Padres in an important game between two
division leaders in the National League. The Braves have been on a little
slide of late. The Braves are 5-5 in their last ten games, and this has
allowed the already close race in the NL East to tighten up just a smidge
more. It is going to be a great stretch run in Major League Baseball.
THE HEAT IS ON: Heat advisories continue through 7 p.m. Sunday across North
and Central Alabama for heat indices that will be above 110 degrees. That
means that it will feel like 110 degrees to your body. Heat of this
magnitude can cause serious health problems. Please remember to take
frequent breaks in a cool spot in you must be outdoors. Dress appropriately
in loose fitting, light colored clothing. Drink plenty of water. Don't
forget to check family, friends and neighbors.
OUR WEATHER: Temperatures should be the hottest seen o far this year in
most locations. Highs should average 95 degrees, with several readings in
the 97-100 degree range later this afternoon. The hottest readings observed
so far this year include: 94F at Birmingham, 96 at Anniston, 97 at
Tuscaloosa and 94 at Calera.
A large upper level trough is going to develop over the eastern U.S. This
will allow a cold front to penetrate deep into the South. This front will
spread a band of showers and storms across Alabama on Sunday. Some of those
could be strong to severe. Behind the front, drier air will spread into
Alabama, with temperatures falling back into the upper 80s for highs with
60s for lows for the first half of the week.
TROPICS: Things are remarkably quiet in the tropical Atlantic. The
remnants of Tropical Depression Ten are spreading over the Bahamas and there
is disturbed weather in the northwestern Caribbean. A strong tropical wave
has just moved off the coast of Africa. It is prime season for the powerful
Cape Verde storms to form, so we will be watching this disturbance carefully
as it moves across the Atlantic over the next week.
CANADIAN TORNADOES: Tornadoes touched down Friday afternoon near Guelph,
Ontario, about fifty miles west of Toronto. At least two twisters were
reported. Damage was relatively light and no injuries were reported.
Severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect at the Toronto Airport, site of
an August 9th crash of an Air France jet that ran off the end of the runway
during a storm.
ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami
were faced with a dilemma. A reconnaissance plane flying into then Tropical
Storm Andrew could not find a circulation center in the system located a few
hundred miles northeast of Puerto Rico, meaning that the system was
technically not even a tropical depression any longer. But forecasters
knew that the disturbance would be moving into an area that was favorable
for development, so they were reluctant to downgrade Andrew, as that would
be confusing to the public. Andrew would turn west and strengthen over the
next three days, making landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane in South Florida
during the pre-dawn hours of August 24th.
