Once again, we can expect lots of showers and storms across the area today.
Some of the storms could be strong, with the added influence of an upper
level disturbance moving across the area, so be on the lookout for those.
Storms will produce very heavy rain that can produce flooding in a short
period of time, deadly lightning and even damaging winds over 60 mph. Pay
attention to the sky and to any warnings that are issued.

OUR WEATHER: Our weather is in the middle of summertime reruns. Where is
that fall lineup? Oh, there it is, back in Montana. A surge of cooler air
will move southward behind a cold front this week and will approach Alabama
late in the week, but it should stall over the Tennessee Valley. This could
mean some excessive rainfall amounts just to our north and increased rain
chances for us.

RECORD BIN: 55F in Cut Bank, MT on Friday afternoon was a record as the
northern tier of taste got their first taste of autumn behind a strong cold
front. It was 31F yesterday morning in Meacham, OR, a record for the date.
Hot in the Northeast yesterday, including 97F at LaGuardia Airport and 95F
at Atlantic City. Alaska was warm also. It was a record 82F at Juneau
yesterday. It was 82F in Anchorage, smashing their old record for the date
of 74F.

TROPICS: Irene is very close to becoming a hurricane early this afternoon ,
and could do so at any time. The threat to the U.S. East Coast appears to
be minimal. Bermuda is being protected by the high that it lends its name
to, the Bermuda High. That high is centered over the tiny island nation and
is steering the tropical system northwestward at the present time. Over the
next four days, that motion will become more northerly and then
northeasterly. Then Irene will be accelerating out to sea. The seedling
tropical wave that could eventually be Tropical Depression Ten is located
just under 1,000 miles east of the Windward Islands this afternoon.
Conditions look favorable for this disturbance to become a depression during
the next day or so.

ON THIS DATE IN 1935: A severe thunderstorm collapsed the roof of the B&O
Hall of Transportation Building, which housed the most important collection
of railroad models, pictures, exhibits and stock in the world. Many old,
fragile locomotives like the Tom Thumb and Thomas Jefferson steam engines
fortunately escaped destruction. The largest locomotives, which were lined
up in the center of the building, acted to hold up the collapsing roof. The
collection would again be damaged by a collapsing roof in 2003 when the
President's Day Snowstorm dumped a record 28.2 inches of snow in four days
,including 21.8 inches on February 16th.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: An unexpected storm blew up during a sailing race in
the waters off the English Coast, capsizing seventy seven boats. It is
regarded as one of the worst disasters in the history of yachting. Every
available boat and helicopter along the coast was pressed into duty in the
largest marine rescue since the British evacuation of the beaches at Dunkirk
during World War II. The official weather forecast for the day called for
moderate winds, but winds reached force ten (55-63 mph) during the disaster.
