...Another Typical August Day...

Today will be another day that will feature a classic summer mix of morning
sunshine and scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Most of the storms will come
from about 2:00 until 8:00 p.m., and like recent days some of those storms
will produce lots of wicked lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds. Before
storms develop temperatures will again rise into the low and mid 90s.

We will pretty much stick with a persistence forecast through Friday, very
typical of mid-August in Alabama. We might see an increase in the coverage
of showers and storms late in the weekend and early next week in response to
a cold front which is forecast to stall out just north of Alabama. It is
doubtful that any of the cooler and drier air behind that front will reach
us.

STORMS OF SUMMER: More big downpours across Alabama yesterday, and some of
the storms were severe. About 4,500 Alabama Power customers in the
Birmingham metro area were in the dark for a brief time, and traffic was
snarled along U.S. 31 in Homewood for a while due to downed power lines.

Rain totals yesterday included 1.36" at Newell (Randolph county), 1.02" at
Vincent, .90" at Alexander City, .68" at Inverness, and .41" at Riverchase.

TROPICS: Irene intensified into a category two hurricane late yesterday. The
system is well to the southeast of Newfoundland, and is moving east over
open water.

The system that was tropical depression ten could regenerate today or
tomorrow. It is expected to be near the Bahamas in a few days, and could be
a threat to Florida, and might even have a shot of getting into the Gulf of
Mexico by early next week.
