...More Showers and Storms...

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS BILL MURRAY? Sort of like Carmen Sandiego, it is quite the game in the Weather Office, to guess where I am each week. J.B. always prefaces his instant messages to me with, “Where are you today, Bill?” I am glad that I love to travel. Left Baltimore this morning on an airline that is owned by a company more famous for its hot wings than its airplane wings. I drove another two hours to get here. I am only a few miles from the greatest tourist trap in the U.S. Any guesses as to my location?

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Alright, I have been away from forecasting since Sunday. When I wrote my last package, there was this pesky upper level low pressure system over Alabama. One week later, I come back to find that same low pressure system in place. Okay, who was supposed to take out the low?

I know it was someone’s job. I’m waiting...

The upper low will continue to combine with the warm and moist airmass over Alabama to give us a good chance of showers and storms this afternoon. Many areas will see some rain, and area that get under a slow moving storm could see some pulse type severe weather with strong winds and dangerous lightning, as well as potential flooding rains. The low should begin moving out to the northeast, lessening our rain chances over te next few days, but you’ve heard that before.

IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Irene may be Hurricane Irene by the time that you read this. The system is a little more than 500 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras this morning. Irene is expected not to increase past Category One hurricane status as it slides around the periphery of the Bermuda High. It should remain offshore from the East Coast of the United States.
Elsewhere across the Atlantic, tropical depression number ten may have already formed by the time you drink your Saturday morning coffee, about 1,000 miles east of the Windward Islands. This system may well follow the track of Irene, passing north of Puerto Rico and around the periphery of the Bermuda High.
