DOES SAMENESS MEAN BOREDOM? Just because our forecast sounds like a summer rerun everyday, we hope you are not ignoring the forecast.

In reality, no two days are exactly alike. Yesterday, for example, we had a dry layer move in aloft which greatly cut down on thunderstorm activity. Today we are back in the old ballgame. A low pressure area aloft was moving inland over SW Alabama and it will continue northward through Saturday. So, what does this mean? It means an increase in showers and thunderstorms, at least through Saturday and possibly Sunday. While we do not see an all-day rain by any means, a number of communities will get wet. Showers and storms developed quickly late this morning. By far, the more numerous ones were over the eastern half of the state. Some areas, especially in Clay and adjoining counties, probably got around 2 inches of rain in just an hour or so. The upper air profile suggests that the storms may be very lazy moving at only 3 or 4 miles an hour giving them time to put down too much rain. See our day-by-day forecast for all of the details.

BIG WATERSPOUT: It was observed off Gulf Shores at midday by Bill Bussey of the famous Rick ‘n Bubba radio team. He sent us several photos. (now posted on our blog!)

TORNADOES IN STRANGE PLACES: Sometimes a tornado will occur in most unlikely locations. Back on August 11, 1993, a rather powerful tornado (F3) cut a 17-mile path in the Ashley National Forest in Utah, even at elevations as high as 10,800 feet. While we are roaming, a few other notes. 32 in Meacham, Oregon was the cold spot this morning...115 in Death Valley yesterday...at midday 88 degrees on Aruba with a dew point a very high 77 and east winds gusting to 35...in California, Fresno has gone 20 days in a row with temperatures 100 or higher...back in good old Birmingham, we have touched the 90-degree mark only 1 day in the last two weeks.

AT THE BEACH: Rather numerous showers and thunderstorms at times over the weekend, but decreasing in number Monday and Tuesday. Highs between 88 and 92.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Irene is persistent. She grew stronger this morning and a reconnaissance plane will visit her later today. She was about 300 miles SSW of Bermuda and about 700 miles SE of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. She was moving NW at 13 and she should continue that for the next 24 hours, but slowing down a bit. Winds are up to 65 mph and she should become a hurricane by tomorrow. All of the hurricane models now suggest she will pass some 100 miles east of the North Carolina outer banks and gradually turn more NE. Too early to say New England is totally out of danger.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: If there was such a thing, Little Miss Molly would be a general in the doggie world. She definitely plans ahead. For example, I have made 10 round trips from my office to the kitchen this morning. (Now on the second pot of coffee.) She has strategically placed toys and her favorite balls to where I could not help but notice them. When she hears me coming, she races to the nearest ball, grabs it in her mouth and is standing there with her tale wagging like a buzz saw hoping to entice me into a ballgame. I have obliged at least 10 times this morning. Those little eyes are so convincing I simply cannot say no. life goes on—erratically.
