GOOD AFTERNOON: It has looked more like a September morning than an August
morning across some parts of Central Alabama, as clouds have hung tough,
along with a few light showers. Temperatures have been running a few
degrees cooler than yesterday at most locations due to the clouds.
The weather pattern over Alabama and the South is a complex one. First,
there is a broad cyclonic circulation in the mid levels of the atmosphere,
centered over Central Alabama. At the center of this low, upper level
temperatures are cool for early August, adding instability to the
atmosphere. At the surface, low pressure is centered in the northern Gulf
of Mexico, just offshore of the Alabama/Northwest Florida coast. Not good
news for those folks squeezing in one last weekend at the beach before
school starts.

A disturbance is rotating around the northern periphery of the upper level
low across North Central Alabama. This disturbance has been setting off a
few light rain showers over our area and even a little thunder earlier over
the Tennessee Valley.

The upper low should be around for at least the next couple of days, and
perhaps longer. As long as it is in the mix, we will have a wet pattern
with chances of showers and storms at just about any point, but especially
during the afternoons and evenings.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Harvey is wobbling around over the open Atlantic
well east of Bermuda this afternoon. With top winds of 60 mph, Harvey could
strengthen a tad today before starting to lose tropical characteristics.
Tropical Depression Nine is over cool waters and is not strengthening for
now, but that is expected to change in about 48 hours. Then, the question
will be whether the system turns north through a weakness in the subtropical
ridge. It should go on to become a tropical storm. Interestingly, the low
over the northern Gulf south of Pensacola might have become tropical if it
were not so close to land. It will still be monitored.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Tropical Storm Barry moved inland on the Gulf Coast
near Fort Walton Beach around midnight with top winds of 60 mph. The storm
caused $30 million in damage. Heavy rains spread northwestward across
Alabama, dropping three inches in the Birmingham area. One of the
casualties of the storm was the N'Sync concert at Legion Field. It was
cancelled due to the rain. Birmingham measured a wind gust of 31 mph.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: Virginia experienced its worst tornado outbreak ever
as eighteen tornadoes ripped through the state in five hours. In an
average year, only six tornadoes are reported in the state and the worst
outbreak prior to this date produced just ten twisters. The most
devastating tornado caused severe damage in the historic part of Petersburg,
then moved on to Pocahontas Island and into Colonial Heights. Here the
storm ripped apart a WalMart store, killing three people and injuring nearly
200. The F4 twister was the first known violent tornado in Virginia
history. It killed a total of four people and injured 246 along its twelve
mile path. Total damages were nearly $50 million.
