...More Showers and Storms...

GOOD MORNING! The airmass across Alabama was fairly unstable, by
August standards, with some pretty cool air aloft. As a result, showers and
storms exploded during the afternoon. Wind damage was reported in Jackson
County and Colbert County. Two people were injured in Scottsboro. There
were reports of hail to nickel size, including around the Greystone, Brook
Highland and Homewood areas, as well as downed trees and power lines in
Cahaba Heights and ay highways 280/119. Additional wind damage was reported
in western Jefferson County.

MORE STORMS AHEAD: An upper level low pressure system is located
over western Alabama this morning. There is also a stalled front to the
northern of Alabama. The two systems will give us fairly good chances of
showers and thunderstorms today and Sunday. In fact, it looks like it will
lead to a fairly wet week ahead.

CODE ORANGE: An Air Quality Alert is in effect for Jefferson and
Shelby Counties today due to particulate pollution. Sensitive individuals
should exercise caution.

IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Harvey is about 500 miles east of
Bermuda this morning. The storm should weaken into a depression today as it
drifts east and northeast. It will eventually begin to accelerate
northeastward over the open waters of the North Atlantic. Tropical
Depression Number Nine is not very well organized. The system is some 1,200
miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. There is some question as to
whether it will survive.

SPACE SHUTTLE SIGHTINGS: People in places like Boothville,
Louisiana, Biloxi, Mobile, Pensacola, Brewton, Dothan and Panama City got
quite a show around 5:50 a.m. CDT this morning as the Space Shuttle orbiter
(STS-114) and the International Space Station did a flyover. The pair had
just undocked but were still flying close to one another. STS-114 will be
flying over early Sunday and Monday morning and could be visible from
Birmingham. Check out www.heavens-above.com for more information.
