The weather headline in Alabama is shifting from the heat to the threat of
heavy rain. A slow moving front north of the state should become nearly
stationary along the Alabama-Tennessee line tonight, and should keep us in
an unsettled pattern through tomorrow. Our forecast package will highlight
scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms through tomorrow, with the
potential for heavy rain in spots. Additional rain totals of two inches are
possible during the next 36 hours across north and central Alabama.
THE WEEKEND: The front should wash out over the weekend, putting us in a
fairly routine mid-summer setup with partly sunny days and the risk of
afternoon thunderstorms in scattered spots. Highs over the weekend should be
in the 88 to 91 degree range for most places.
TROPICS: We have a parade of three tropical waves in the Atlantic between
the Lesser Antilles and the coast of Africa; all of them could develop
slowly in coming days as they move to the west/northwest. Tropical storm
Franklin is moving slowly north in the Atlantic several hundred miles east
of the U.S. coastline. The system will move on out to sea over the coming
weekend.
BIG DOWNPOURS: Rain totals yesterday included 2.51" at Black Creek
(northeast of Gadsden in Etowah county), 2.01" at Brent, 1.76" at Cordova,
1.69" at Crumly Chapel, 1.61" at Childersburg, 1.34" at Oak Grove (Jefferson
county), 1.17" at the Logan Martin Dam on the Coosa River, 1.11" at
Greystone Farms, 1.06" at Pell City, .97" at Riverside, and .75" at
Greystone Cove.
A JULY CHILL: Both Rapid City, SD and North Platte, NE dropped to 43 degrees
early yesterday morning, a new record low for the date for both cities.
Yesterday's high of 79 in Wichita, KS was a record low maximum for July 27.
