Good news for Alabamians: rain chances are going up, and temperatures will
be going down over the next few days with the approach of a rather strong
cold front for late July. While the front won't pass through Alabama, it
will be close enough for scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms
tomorrow. In fact, a few strong storms might even move in here from the
north late today or tonight. High temperatures will drop from the low 90s
today into the upper 80s tomorrow and on Friday.

WEEKEND PEEK: The surface front should wash out over the weekend, leaving us
in a pattern with intervals of sunshine and scattered, mainly afternoon
thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. Highs should hold in the 87 to 90
degree range for most communities.

TROPICS: The eastern Atlantic is active; two large waves between the Lesser
Antilles and the coast of Africa have potential to get better organized over
the next few days. Tropical storm Franklin is about 200 miles west of
Bermuda and continues to drift erratically. Top winds are only about 40 mph,
and the system should be swept out to the north Atlantic by the weekend.

A COOL CHANGE: In Chicago, where the mercury hit 104 at Midway Airport on
Sunday, temperatures were only in the mid 60s yesterday afternoon following
a line of strong storms ahead of the sharp cold front. A tornado touched
down from one of those storms near Urbana, IL.

AT HOME: High temperatures around Alabama yesterday ranged from 91 at Pinson
to 96 at Decatur. Birmingham's official high was 92, one degree above
normal. An isolated afternoon thunderstorm dropped 0.40" of rain at the ABC
33/40 studios in Riverchase.
