THE ALABAMA STORY: That long awaited "cool" front pushed into extreme NW
Alabama, but it is struggling to come much further south. Because of its
proximity, cloud cover has been above normal today and naturally that holds
down the temperature somewhat. Most of the day's showers and storms so far
have been over the northern third of the state. Look for others to develop
this afternoon and evening. Most of North and Central Alabama will have a
good chance of getting wet and some of those storms will produce heavy rain.
It is possible that the best chance of showers and storms on Saturday will
be down in Central Alabama and not so numerous over the northern third of
the state. We can't take out showers and thunderstorms at all for the next
several days. See our day-by-day forecast and you will also see that we
don't expect any real hot weather.
Yesterday's storms dumped heavy amounts of rain in a number of areas
including Tuscaloosa where over 2 inches fell in some areas.
AIR QUALITY: Thanks to more clouds, lower temperatures and showers, we have
moderate air quality today in the Birmingham area due to particulates,
instead of ozone.
LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: On July 29, 1986, a man in Berne, New York was
struck by lightning while installing dry wall in his home. It was the fourth
time he had been struck in only 9 years which brings up my question. Does
lightning like some people better than others? That lightning in the
Tuscaloosa area last night was especially ferocious. One of our regular
readers said it struck in both their front yard and backyard.
WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: A good chance of showers and thunderstorms with highs
close to 90. They should thin out by Tuesday. The sea surface temperature
just offshore is unusually warm.
BIRMINGHAM'S HOTTEST EVER: It was 107 degrees in Birmingham 75 years ago
today (1930). That still stands as our hottest of all time. The heat was
widespread. On that same day, Holly Springs on US-78 in extreme North
Mississippi had 115--the all-time high for the entire state.
TROPICAL WEATHER: Franklin is stubborn. He is still a tropical storm 240
miles SE of Halifax, Nova Scotia, but he should lose some of his personality
as he moves over the colder waters of the North Atlantic. The disturbed
weather area in the Northern Leeward Islands has developed into a low
pressure area. Could be a tropical depression later today or Saturday.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor Little Miss Molly. Didn't get to play with
her any last night due to all those thunderstorms, but I made sure I took
time this morning. When she sensed I was going to play, she grabbed one of
her balls and ran to the master bedroom at breakneck speed, jumped up in the
middle of the bed and was dancing around like a jack rabbit. She likes for
me to wrestle with her on the bed and try to take the ball away from her. It
is amazing how much of my leisure time is spent playing with Little Miss
Molly, but I guarantee you it is quality leisure time and is satisfying and
relaxing as I could hope for...an e-mail from a gentlemen in Kennedy pointed
out how coyotes most certainly can be dangerous to little dogs. My
sister-in-law in Coos Bay, Oregon e-mailed this morning and said that when
she lived in Apache Junction, east of Phoenix, she used to take the dogs to
the park for a walk in the evenings. "We always saw coyotes on the edge of
the park just waiting for us to get close enough for them to attack our
dogs. We could see their yellow eyes staring at us and naturally we stayed
clear." Life goes on and I will forever protect my little pal.
