THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story today about lower daytime temperatures and
another good chance of showers and thunderstorms. A cool front has edged
into the NW corner of the state. Clouds have been prevalent over the
northern counties today holding down temperatures.

That front will wiggle its way a little bit further southward and probably
get tired and stop some place in North-Central Alabama. This will be the
focus of showers and thunderstorms again Friday and some spots will get
locally heavy rain. The storms through this evening will also dump some
heavy rain in spots. Then for the weekend, we will still have to include
some scattered showers and storms each day, but not as numerous as tonight
and Friday. We don't see any more mid 90s heat at least for the next 5 to 7
days. Let's look at a few 24-hour rainfall amounts:

2.01 inches in Brent
2.51 at Black Creek (NE Etowah County)
3.52 in Carbon Hill
1.61 at Childersburg

There was some flooding in several locations including Oneonta where up to a
foot of water flooded areas around the intersection of Highway 75 and
US-231.

A side benefit is an improvement in air quality to moderate in the
Birmingham area today.

OUR GULF OF MEXICO: It remains quiet, but the water temperatures are quite
warm-as high as 87 degrees-from buoys off Galveston, Biloxi and Pensacola.
Along the coast from Gulf Shores to Panama City, a good chance of showers
and thunderstorms Friday and Saturday, but scattered ones on Sunday and
Monday. Highs 88 to 90.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Franklin was 360 miles NW of Bermuda and
he should not bother the USA. A tropical wave is very active 575 miles east
of the Northern Leeward Islands. A tropical depression may form in the next
couple of days. A plane will have a look-see.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: 122 in Death Valley was the USA hot spot Wednesday...this
morning it was 36 at Big Piney, Wyoming and in Yellowstone National
Park...way back in 1819, a powerful hurricane moved onto the Mississippi
coast. It was called the Bay St. Louis storm and was the worst in 50 years.
It devastated the same area that Hurricane Camille would strike almost
exactly 150 years later. The U.S. Man-of-War firebrand was lost when the
schooner went down. 39 crew members drowned.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was a few degrees cooler this morning, so
little Miss Molly and I walked the entire half mile. Even so, she was pooped
when she got home. I gave her the usual first treat of the day. She took it
to the middle of the living area, laid it down and stretched out to cool off
for a few minutes before eating it. That's unusual...several e-mails
yesterday about coyotes advising me that they can indeed play havoc with
small dogs in no time flat. The hedgerow, which extends 1/4 mile along the
upper part of our walking track, is so dense in places that you can't see
through. Wouldn't be surprised to see a grizzly bear, rhino or tiger come
charging out at any minute. Teasing, of course, but I am fearful of a snake.
It is also loaded with birds and even some rabbits. Life goes on.
