THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of encouragement if you're getting tired
of our hottest weather so far this summer. A creeping cold front was
near the NW edge of Tennessee at midday. It will finally push down to the NW
corner of Alabama by daybreak and possibly into Central Alabama by nightfall
Thursday. You could almost walk that fast. Still, it will increase the
showers and thunderstorms across our area Thursday and some folks will get
locally heavy rain. It will also pull the old thermometer back to its senses
with highs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday expected to be around 88 or 89.
While Thursday will have the most showers and storms, there will also be
scattered ones Friday and Saturday but thinning out on Sunday.

This increase in showers and storms will help our air quality, even though a
Code Orange Ozone Alert continued for the Birmingham metro area today.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Franklin was 265 miles WNW of Bermuda at
midday. That is 1,010 miles east of Birmingham (we have a program that shows
that automatically). He will continue generally NE into colder waters of the
North Atlantic. There are two or three other tropical waves out in the
Eastern Atlantic that we will be watching. Closer to home, the Gulf of
Mexico has recovered nicely from the upwelling of recent storms. Water
temperatures are averaging 85 to 86 degrees and there is even some 87-degree
water over the North Gulf. That is as delicious for hurricanes as ice cream
is for a kid. The Gulf is quiet at this time, however.

GETTING ALL YOUR RAIN IN ONE BUCKET: That was a bad, bad desert
thunderstorm in Yuma, Arizona on this date in 1989. The wind gusted to 90
mph and visibility dropped to zero in stinging, blowing sand and blowing
dust. Then the storm dumped 2.55 inches of rain in one hour causing flash
flooding. That is equal to their normal for the whole year!

THE FURNACE AND THE FREEZER: The east will be gradually cooling down. It
was 100 in Charlotte yesterday. Ft. Wayne, Indiana had 93 yesterday, but
they will have sweater weather tonight with 55. NYC will cool from 97 today
to a high of 81 tomorrow.there is an amazing 234-degree difference in
temperature from 111 below zero at Vostok, Antarctica today to an expected
blistering 123 degrees at Basrah, Iraq...coolest in the USA this morning was
38 in Yellowstone Park.

NICE COMPLIMENT: In their 2005 web site review, South TV News.com gave the
33/40 weather page an A+ with the comment, "Best in the market, probably
best in our coverage area and possibly the best in the country." That's
nice. We all try very hard to keep it fresh.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: On our late night walks, I really believe
little Miss Molly wouldn't turn around until she gets to Chattanooga. She's
ready for a walk at any hour of the day or night. However, since the weather
got hot, I limit her to our own backyard. Going up the walking track there
are so many varmints. Still, in our backyard, she will chase any bug that
moves and she especially likes to jump up and paw at lightning bugs. I have
a friend who drives from Birmingham to North St. Clair County in the
evening. He reported seeing a large coyote standing on the side of I-59 near
Ashville recently waiting for a chance to dash across. I am near certain
Molly and I saw a coyote dive headfirst into the underbrush right behind our
house late one night last year. I assume that a coyote could attack Molly
and do great harm in seconds. That would kill me. I just can't take the
risk. She is my pal forever. Life goes on.
