THE ALABAMA STORY: It is one of heat and humidity, but things are
looking up as a "cool" front gets close to Alabama by Thursday. Meanwhile, a
Code Orange Ozone Alert continued today for the Birmingham area.
Temperatures should go back into the low 90s tomorrow. By Thursday, the
front should be close enough to increase our showers and thunderstorms and
hold high temperatures to the upper 80s. Normal high for this part of July
is 91. It appears our best chance of getting showers and storms will be on
Thursday. Some spots will get downpours, especially in the afternoon and
evening. There is still a chance of showers and storms all the way through
the weekend.

IN SEARCH OF COOL AIR: Well, it's not to be found in Alabama,
although if you are vacationing atop Mt. Cheaha, the high yesterday was only
86. Some selected official Monday highs:

94 in Mobile, Selma, Pinson, Birmingham
95 in Hamilton, Gadsden, Anniston, Cullman,
Livingston, Montgomery, Troy
96 in Jasper, Tuscaloosa and Decatur
97 in Atmore
99 in Brewton

There is plenty of cool air elsewhere. It was below freezing in
Yellowstone National Park with 29 this morning. Around 3:00 a.m. a brief
heavy snow shower moved across Monarch Pass in Central Colorado. At the
bottom of the world, it was 102 below zero today at Vostok, Antarctica and
it is expected to drop to 108 below in the next 24 to 36 hours. (They are in
mid-winter.) Just thought that might cool you off a bit.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Franklin was barely a tropical storm this
afternoon 210 miles west of Bermuda. He should continue moving slowly NE
over the open Atlantic and weaken even more by Thursday. Now we will watch a
large tropical wave way out in the Atlantic 400 miles ESE of the Windward
Islands. It may become better organized in the next couple of days. The next
tropical storm name is Harvey.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: Sure was tragic about the two persons
being struck and killed by lightning at Gulf Shores Saturday. We can't over
emphasize the danger. Lightning also kills a lot of animals. I remember
newspaper pictures quite a few years ago of 15 dead milk cows that had
sought refuge under a large tree during a thunderstorm. Many years ago, out
in Utah, a single lightning bolt killed 504 sheep.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Woe is me. I only had time to enjoy
about 2.6 ounces of fresh coffee before little Miss Molly ordered me outside
to go walking very early this morning. The sun was just rising. Because of
all the haze, the sunrise was a sight to see back lighting the Old Crow
Motel. The grass along the walking track has been growing faster than kudzu.
This morning we saw at least 50 adolescent bees taking cross pollination
training. They were landing atop the taller grass that was turning to seed.
Molly, of course, had to sniff the grass and the bees. One of the bees was
heavy enough to pull the stalk of grass downward, hitting Molly on her nose.
She jumped up and turned 180 degrees in midair. I never know what to expect.
When Molly got home, she was so hot and tired that she declined my offer of
a treat for the first time in her life. Instead, she stretched out to cool
off. Life goes on.
