...Goodbye Spring...
GOOD MORNING: Summer arrives officially (astronomically) at 1:46 a.m. CDT
tomorrow morning.
NICE END TO SPRING: This final day of Spring 2005 will be a pleasant one
here in Alabama, much like the past few days. An upper level low to the
east of Alabama over Georgia and South Carolina will continue to fire
convection over those areas. We will be in a northerly upper flow on the
back side of the low. An old, washed up front extends over the Gulf and
across the Florida Peninsula, with a couple of surface low sliding along the
boundary, well offshore of the East Coast. An area of strong high pressure
at the surface is over the Great Lakes, giving us an easterly low level
flow, and preventing the return of any juice Gulf moisture.
ALL THAT SAID... Today should feature ample sunshine, with scattered
cumulus clouds. We still think there could be a shower over East or
Northeast Alabama in association with a trough that will rotate our way.
The NAM model even hints at a slight chance even overnight tonight, but that
chance and any rainfall amounts should be small. We will call for a slight
chance of showers on Tuesday and Wednesday across the area, noting that the
NAM is quite a bit wetter than the GFS model. A backdoor cold front
(arriving from the northeast) approaches Thursday, but without much
moisture, so we will continue the trend of just a chance of showers and
storms. The GFS has consistently developed a low over the Gulf and moved it
northeast, perhaps with tropical characteristics, but we will have to wait
and see Ironically, if that does happen, we may be drier. The models hint
at increasing precipitation after next weekend as the Bermuda high flexes
its muscles and increases our low level flow from the south.
ON THIS DATE IN 2001: A major hailstorm pounded Denver International
Airport, damaging 93 commercial planes and causing the cancellation of
hundreds of flights over the next several days. There were two minor
injuries. Over 14,000 holes and cracks were punched in the flat roofs of
the terminal buildings by the hail that was up to 2 inches in diameter.
Over 4000 automobiles received hail damage.
