GOOD AFTERNOON: I dont know if you noticed that my typing had become a little p deficient the past couple of weeks. The p-key on my laptop became inoperative and that really causes problems for your typing. Someone suggested that my writing sounded like it was being written by Astro from the Jetsons. You know, like no roblem. But I got a brand new keyboard and I cant blame my typos on anything but trying to write fast...
FORECAST: The sun has been slow to return over eastern sections of the area this morning. Clouds limited late morning temperatures to the 70s from Birmingham to the east. 80s were common over western and South Central sections. Sunshine will be fairly prevalent during the afternoon hours. Showers and storms will be isolated across the area today. Tonight should feature fair and dry skies along with humid conditions that will bring a repeat of the early morning clouds and fog, but they should not be as thick tomorrow. Chances of afternoon showers and storms will increase some tomorrow and even more on Monday and Tuesday. Then scattered afternoon storms will headline the forecast for the rest of the week. Rain chances will be above normal during the next week, with the best chances coming Monday and Tuesday.
TROPICS: The area of low pressure over the western Caribbean has weakened, although heavy showers will continue to affect the Florida Peninsula. A tropical wave is over the eastern Caribbean, but no development is expected.
VERY INTERESTING: Tornado records since 1950 are considered to be official. Something very interesting happened in Oklahoma last month. There was not a single tornado in the Sooner State in the month of May.
That is the first time since 1950 that has occurred. In 1988, there were two tornadoes, which was the previous record. In 1999, there were ninety in Oklahoma in May. The average number of tornadoes there in any given May is 21.
NATIONAL TORNADO STATISTICS: Nationally, there were very few tornadoes in the month of May 2005. The preliminary count of 130 is far fewer than the 543, 509 and 546 that were recorded in May 2002, 2003 and 2004. There have been five tornado fatalities so far in 2005. During the same period in 2004, there were 15 fatalities and in 2003, there had been 51. For the first time in a long time, there were none in March or April. There have been three killer tornadoes so far this year. The first occurred late on January 12th near El Dorado, AR when an F3 twister killed two people along its 24 mile path. The second occurred around 5 p.m. the following day two miles south of Arlington, GA. Surprisingly, there has not been a fatality since March 22nd, when an F3 tornado killed one person near Donaldsonville, GA.
ON THIS DATE IN 1834: The normal tranquility of the Virginia spring was broken three times by significant tornado outbreaks during May ad June 1834. The first occurred on May 5th when a swarm of tornado cut a seventy mile path through the central part of the state near Petersburg, killing three. The second occurred on this date in the same general area. One of the June 4th tornadoes actually crossed the path of one of the May 5th twisters. A few plantations were damaged both days. The final outback occurred on June 21st, when a tornado struck Williamsburg, VA.
