SUMMER IS HERE: Well, not really, at least not officially. The official arrival of summer is on June 21 at 1:45 a.m. Back in the wintertime, the latest the sun rose was at 6:52; now it rises 135 minutes earlier. We will only gain about 1 more minute of morning daylight until the sun slowly starts rising a big later. We now have 135 minutes more of evening sunlight, so we have gained 4.5 hours since the shortest day. We will gain about 8 more minutes of afternoon daylight.

The weather is taking on more of a summer appearance. Gone are the all-day rains that we have had recently. We can now expect for a good deal of sunshine most days punctuated by scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. For tomorrow, those storms should be quite scarce. Even on Sunday, they are not expected to be widespread. There should then be an increase of showers and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday, especially on Monday. Look for high temperatures consistently in the mid 80s.

Several severe thunderstorms occurred yesterday afternoon and there was some street flooding. The worst of the flooding was in Talladega County, both in Munford and the city of Talladega. 2.16 inches of rain fell in Munford. A Forest Service rain gauge at Talladega reported 3.36 inches of rain with over 2 inches in one hour. We received another reliable report this morning of around 5.50 inches of rain since last weekend at Clay in NE Jefferson County.

AT THE BEACH: Highs over the weekend 85-88. There will be scattered showers and storms each day, but not an all-day rain. The water temperature is close to 80.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Clouds and thunderstorms over the NW Caribbean, across Cuba, Florida and the Eastern Gulf are associated with a upper level disturbance. A westward-moving tropical wave will affect the Windward Islands for the next day or two. In both areas, upper level winds, at least for now, are not favorable for tropical development.

DESK CLEANING TIME: Lots of severe weather yesterday in Eastern Colorado. At least 8 tornadoes reported and there was a lot of hail. Two-inch hail at Last Chance on US 36, 70 miles east of Denver, knocked out windows and stripped bark from trees. Near Shamrock and Cedar Point hailstones were 4 inches in diameter knocking out all the windows on the west side of buildings, punching holes in roofs, denting automobile and damaging wheat and beet fields...105 in Death Valley and Laredo was the hottest yesterday...it was 28 this morning in Truckee, California and Shirley Basin, Wyoming.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I often wonder what little Miss Molly thinks of me when I act so silly with her and especially when she looks back at me following her around the walking track. Molly is only 10 inches tall and I am 72 inches tall. I probably look like a dinosaur to her, especially when a certain overly aggressive dog comes rushing up to play with Molly and she dives between my legs and looks straight up with those big eyes wanting me to save her. As soon as she hopped out of bed this morning, she went on an energy burst bouncing off of all the chairs in the living area and slinging her favorite ball all over the place. I was headed for the kitchen, but I cancelled the coffee and played with Molly. Life goes on.
