THE SPONGY GROUND: A big part of Alabama still has a soft ground after all
of the rain from last weekend through yesterday. Scattered thunderstorms
developed again today with some of the stronger ones in the south. However,
thunderstorms were producing locally heavy rain this afternoon from near and
NE of Birmingham up toward Gadsden. Those storms will diminish this evening.
The weather is finally settling down some and the next several days will be
more typical for June. As a low pressure area near the Mississippi-Tennessee
border moves north and dissipates and a low aloft moves NE passing NW of us,
the showers and storms will be fewer in number. We expect only widely
scattered storms Friday and even fewer on Saturday. On Sunday and Monday,
there may be an increase again, but not an all day rain like we have
experienced a couple of times lately. Afternoons will get warmer--mostly in
the mid 80s starting tomorrow and all the way through early next week.
A LOOK BACK AT MAY: It's a great example why you should take weather
statistics with caution. May ended with above normal rainfall for the
Birmingham area. However, a mere 0.02 fell during the first two weeks.
Almost all of the rain came from last weekend through the end of the month.
Birmingham received 5.62 inches. The month of May also averaged 2 degrees
cooler than normal.
YESTERDAY'S RAINFALL: It wasn't as widespread, but some Alabama locations
received heavy amounts. In the last 24 hours, these few examples:
2.00 inches at Bankhead Lock and Dam
1.35 in Clanton
1.49 at Horseshoe Bend
1.62 at Holt (east edge of Tuscaloosa)
In the last four days, Tuscaloosa Airport has received 4 inches of rain,
Anniston almost 3 inches and Birmingham nearly 5 inches.
COPPER BASIN: That is a U.S. Forest Service weather station in Idaho in
Custer County. They recorded the lowest temperature in the lower 48 states
this morning with 21. It's amazing how many reports we get from far and wide
and also with strange sounding names. For example, we also get reports from
Bear Canyon and Skull Gulch in Idaho...Other notes...it was 109 in Death
Valley for the hottest yesterday.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The ground is very soft in our tiny corner. A
little over a week ago, you could hear the ground crunch when walking due to
the dry crust. The recent rains have brought a bunch of earthworms out
taking a walk. We meet them strolling down the concrete walking track.
Little Miss Molly has to stop and speak to everyone. In fact, I think she
wants to gobble them up, but I always pull back on the leash just in time.
This morning she was reaching for a small mushroom that had sprung up. I
stopped her just in time. I don't ever know which ones are poisonous. Molly
apparently thought it was a vanilla ice cream cone...a thunderstorm moved
across our tiny corner this afternoon. As soon as Molly heard the first peal
of thunder, she was in my office in a flash looking for one of her safe
weather spots. I picked her up and loved her and then let her sit on my
desk. She likes that. Life goes on.
