...Have A Nice Memorial Day...
GOOD MORNING: I wish that I had better news for your forecast for this
Memorial Day, but I don't. A shortwave trough, or small bend in the upper
level flow, to the west of Alabama will keep us in an unsettled weather
pattern through midweek. This means periods of showers and storms until the
surface low pressure center associated with the trough moves east of
Alabama.
TODAY/TONIGHT: It is difficult to predict the timing of individual upper
level disturbances accurately. Radar trends become the most important tool
in predicting short term weather during such events. Waves of showers and
thunderstorms will move across the state during the day today and tonight.
It won't rain all the time, and some areas will get more rainfall than
others. But most everyone should get wet and amounts will average around 2
inches today and tonight..
TUESDAY: Tomorrow looks wetter than today, with rainfall amounts averaging
over two and one half inches as more periods of showers and storms continue.
Again, timing will be difficult. Just expect to get wet.
WEDNESDAY: Wednesday looks like a transition day as the surface low moves
across North Alabama, winds shift to the west and northwest and slightly
drier air filters into the area.
THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Looks like we will get a break from the rain during this
period. There still will be a slight chance of showers and storms, and it
will be a little warmer.
THE CYCLONE STATE: Kansas is known as the Sunflower State. I have also
heard it called the Cyclone State. That nickname probably arose as a result
of the tornadoes that devastated Irving, Kansas on May 30, 1879. The town
was destroyed by two tornadoes that occurred within a few minutes of each
other. The first, a probable F4, destroyed much of the town around 5:30
p.m. Dazed residents had scarcely emerged from their storm cellars when
they realized that another funnel was bearing down on their town. And it
was even bigger than the first. For years, the twin tornadoes were the
stuff of legends on the Plains.
