GOOD AFTERNOON: If I were to be sentenced to have to experience only one
kind of weather for the rest of my life, this morning's weather would be
it. Cloudy and cool with a little fog. The delightful sound of moderate
rain falling on an already green landscape. Occasional rolls of low,
rumbling thunder. No severe weather, just a nice gentle rain. Now, I
realize that experiencing just one kind of weather would get old, because I
enjoy every kind. As Mark Twain once said, I think, "The weather is always
doing something." That is what makes it so fun. What would be your perfect
weather?

MORNING RAINS: A band of moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms moved
into Alabama during the early morning hours and spread northeastward across
the state. Rainfall amounts were generous, with widespread one inch amounts
over Central Alabama and up to three inches over parts of Sumter and Greene
Counties. 2.04 inches fell at the Birmingham Airport.

THIS AFTERNOON/TONIGHT: Additional showers and thunderstorms are moving
across North and Central Alabama this afternoon. We are also tracking two
areas of thunderstorms over Mississippi. One, associated with an upper
level disturbance over East Central Mississippi, will move over North
Alabama this afternoon, bringing some heavy rain and lightning. Rainfall
amounts with this system may total one inch.

Our second disturbance is near Alexandria, Louisiana early this afternoon.
A large area of showers and intense thunderstorms is spreading northeast
ahead of this system. This activity will reach southwestern sections of our
area, around Sumter and Green Counties, around mid-afternoon, the Birmingham
area by late afternoon and northeast sections during the early evening.
Another upper level disturbance is hanging back over Texas and will head our
way overnight into tomorrow. It will bring more showers and storms.

SEVERE WEATHER: Areas south of a line from Tuscaloosa to Tuskegee to Ozark
might have severe weather tonight as the disturbance over Texas combines
with good instability over Louisiana, southern Mississippi and Alabama
overnight. There is a moderate risk outlook for severe weather, including
the possibility of a couple of tornadoes over the coastal areas of Texas
this afternoon.

REST OF THE WEEK: Folks, it doesn't get much better. We stay in this same
pattern through at least part of Wednesday, with high moisture levels and
periods of showers and thunderstorms from time to time. If this morning is
any indication, the earlier thoughts about five inches of rain this week
might be low if anything. Some locations might have that much by tomorrow.

With the recent dry conditions, major flooding is not expected, but
localized flooding could quickly ensue in areas which get several inches of
rain in a short period.

By Wednesday afternoon, the main surface low should move east of Alabama,
putting an end to the bouts of widespread rain and storms. Still, showers
and storms will stay in the forecast into the weekend as we continue in a
moist, southerly flow.
