ARE WE IN FOR A HOT, DRY SUMMER? I ended that headline with a question mark because we simply dont know. There are some hints that we could be going that way. We are over 5 inches short on rainfall now and extended very dry weather and heat waves are closely related. We are a bit concerned about the latest 90-day outlook from the National Climatic Center in Washington. It covers June, July and August and they predict above normal temperatures through much of the Southeast. The center of the hottest weather expected is right over North Alabama. We all know that a three-month forecast has to be taken with a box of salt, but those outlooks are somewhat useful. Lets just hope its not true.
We can have some major heat waves in June, July and August. Just one example is 1952 when temperatures soared to the upper 90s by the middle of June and it stayed very hot all the way through July. The average high was 103 for the last 11 days of July and only 1/10th of an inch of rain fell at Birmingham Airport in 23 days.
BACK TO THE PRESENT: We are looking for our best chance of showers and thunderstorms to occur tonight and Friday. There could be a few strong storms late tonight and Friday. The Storm Prediction Center has most of Alabama under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms Friday. Does not appear to be a major threat. Here in Central Alabama, some communities will get about 1 inch of rain and maybe some heavier amounts to the north and NE of Birmingham. The good news is that we dont expect any rain on Saturday and Sunday. In fact, by late Friday night almost all of the showers will be down in South Alabama. For the Brunos Memorial Classic at Greystone, the Saturday and Sunday should be dry with highs in the low 80s.
A STRANGE HURRICANE: Tropical Storm Adrian became a minimal hurricane early this afternoon off the west coast of Central America. The hurricane will cross El Salvador and Honduras (very rare) and eventually through Central Cuba Sunday morning. It remains to be seen if it will be torn apart crossing mountainous Central America. Life-threatening flash floods should occur in those two countries. It will maintain the name Adrian when it moves across the NW Caribbean, across Cuba and into the Bahamas. Extremely unusual for one to cross from the Pacific into the Atlantic Basin!
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The instant we stepped outside this morning, Little Miss Mollys pulse rate went off the scale. A few feet away the community cat was crouched just beyond the wooden fence alongside the walking track. Could only see the bottom half of the cat. Molly zoomed to within five feet of the cat and was jumping up and down and barking so loud that her front feet were coming up off the ground. She edged closer to the cat and he finally hissed at her. Talking about doing a quick 180, she almost jumped back and landed on my feet for help. At the upper end of the walking track for the second day in a row, we encountered a pot-gutted gnat. He has it in for me. Both times he followed me and kept landing behind my left ear. I kept slapping myself and only got a red blotch. Two mockingbirds were also making it known that we were not welcome. We apparently walked too close to their nest. When Molly got home, her tongue was hanging out and she plopped down on the cool floor and didnt eve ask for a treat. Life goes on.
