HEADED FOR SOME WET WEATHER: One of the lowest temperatures in Alabama this morning was 43 at DeSoto State Park, but most lows were in the 50s as a warming trend has set in. We still dont see any unusually warm temperatures for the next five days with most highs in the low to mid 80s.
Just be thankful were not having a repeat of 1962. A major heat wave during May of 62 saw the temperature go into the 90s for 26 days in a row, except for one day when it was 88. On May 27 it was 98 followed by 99 the next day. There was a crippling dry spell with only 0.04 rainfall for the first 28 days.
A lot of people are looking forward to some rain starting later Thursday and increasing Thursday night and Friday. We realize that with a major golf tournament in town, the timing is not good. Some showers should reach the area Thursday afternoon with showers and thunderstorms increasing Thursday night and a good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Friday. We believe that the showers and storms will move south of Birmingham Saturday. Sunday looks great with dry weather and pleasant temperatures.
OODLES OF WATERSPOUTS: Waterspouts have occurred for three days in a row in the Florida Keys and many of those have been witnessed by NWS personnel from Key West. On Monday, 6 funnel clouds and 1 waterspout was visible at the same time. Hope they got some nice pictures...unfortunately a weather fatality yesterday when a woman was killed in a Savannah parking lot when a severe thunderstorm uprooted a large oak tree and crushed her automobile...102 in Wink, Texas was the hottest yesterday...it was 26 this morning in Craig, Colorado and 19 at Barrow, Alaska where there is still 7 inches of snow on the ground...another big wet weather system moving in on the Pacific Coast.
INTERESTING TIDBIT: Around the world the interplay between the land and ocean has a tremendous effect on weather. Did you know that 71% of the earth is covered by water vs. 29% land?
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was sitting in my little corner in the living area by our floor-to-ceiling bookcases getting an education when little Miss Molly crawled out of bed stretching and yawning at 8:30 this morning. She came over and got in my lap for some cuddling and interrupted my education. So away we went on our first 1/2 mile walk. To her, the first walk of the day is like a new vacation, so I let her be the boss. Halfway up the track she pulled me down into the back yard of a neighbor that she knows will come out and pet her if they see her. Patty Thompson saw Molly standing as tall as she could on her hind legs and wagging her tail. There was a great visit and some real loving in the middle of the backyard. Patty and Glenn have a granddog that is also a shih-tsu named Mattie. She visits occasionally and Mattie and Molly have a great time together. Life goes on.
