...Wet Week Ahead...
GOOD MORNING! A little bleary-eyed after sitting up into the wee hours of the morning in Denver watching dozens of tornado videos from storm chasers all over the country. It was amazing to see lots of videos of the long loved tornadic supercell that we saw in southern Kansas on May 29th from many different angles. It will be a nice, sleepy long flight home this afternoon.
RAIN AND STORMS AHEAD: Our weather will be unsettled for at least the next five days, with some uncertainty beyond that. An upper level disturbance passed to the north of Alabama overnight, bringing rain mainly to northwestern sections of the state. We will experience a bit of a break today, but a decent southerly flow will begin transporting large amounts of Gulf moisture northward today. Showers will be possible at just about anytime, but the day will not be a washout.
Widespread showers, and even a few thunderstorms will begin developing again late this afternoon and tonight across the area as those moisture levels continue to increase and the combination of another disturbance and front approaching from the northwest combine forces. Good rain chances will continue on Monday. Showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast until Wednesday as a warm and unstable airmass remains in place. A low will sweep across the area Wednesday night, finally putting an end (maybe) to the wet weather Thursday.
ON THIS DATE IN 1953: Alabama was visited by a swarm of tornadoes as much of the country was in the grips of a major storm system. The powerful storm dumped huge snows on the upper Midwest. Highway, airline and train travel was disrupted over a wide area. Ten foot snowdrifts were reported across parts of South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. At least four tornadoes were reported across Northwest Alabama over parts of Colbert, Marion, Walker and Franklin Counties. A mother of six was killed at Wheeler Mountain in Colbert County. Other tornadoes dipped from the sky over parts of Louisiana and Mississippi.
