...A Change To Cooler Weather...

Temperatures will be slightly below normal for the next 48 hours as
Canadian air returns to Alabama. We expect highs in the mid 50s today, and
tomorrow morning should feature a light freeze with most places dropping
into the 25 to 30 degree range by daybreak. The dry and cool weather
continues tomorrow, although the southern branch of the jet stream will push
high cirrus clouds overhead at times.

THE WEEKEND: Clouds will continue to increase on Saturday, but it
now looks like the day will be dry. Wet weather will return on Sunday, and
periods of rain and thunderstorms will continue into at least Monday of next
week. That rain might even extend into Tuesday, and we will have to watch
for any flood potential here early next week as the ground gets saturated.

THE LONG RANGE: The primary American global computer model, the GFS,
continues to hint at the possibility of a change to sharply colder weather
toward the end of the month and the first of March. Still lots of time left
this winter, so don't put away the jackets yet.

TORNADO DRILL: The statewide simulated tornado warning was issued at
exactly 9:15 a.m. yesterday; that was a great opportunity to think about
what you would do in the event of an actual tornado warning. Our spring
tornado season is just around the corner.

STORM ALERT 2005: Our annual severe weather awareness tour continues
tonight; we will be in Hanceville at Wallace State Community College at
7:00, but be sure and get there early for a seat. We will feature stories on
Hurricane Ivan, Bill Murray's tornado chase in the Great Plains in the
spring of 2004, and much more. There is no admission; bring the whole
family!
