A HINT OF A NEW SEASON: The temperature reached 90 Sunday afternoon
in McAllen Texas and I think that is the first 90 so far in the USA. It is
just a hint of things to come. We are now entering the transition time of
year where warm air to the south gets more impatient with colder air to the
north. Eventually family fights break out and we get into the severe weather
season.
Here in Alabama, we consider our prime severe weather season to be
March, April and much of May. However, we can have some strong storms in the
last half of February. The National Weather Service has designated this
week, February 13-18 as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Alabama. A key item
will be the tornado drill-a practice tornado watch and warning on Wednesday.
Also check out the next 3340 Storm Alert Thursday night in Cullman County-at
Hanceville. It starts at 7.
BACK TO THE PRESENT: Quite a bit of rain across Alabama over the
weekend although not as much, overall, as we expected. About one inch fell
at Cordova, Centre, Fort Payne, Mt. Cheaha, Ohatchee, Hamilton and
Talladega. At Steele, in North St. Clair County, 1.26 inches. One of the
heavier amounts was 2.00 at Livingston.
The clouds are now slowly breaking up and moving away. This will
allow some patchy fog to develop tonight. Look for mostly sunshine Tuesday
and the old thermometer is going to be beside itself rising to the low and
mid-70s. This will be about 15 degrees too warm for mid-February. See our
day-by-day forecast and you will see some showers back in the picture for
Wednesday and dry weather Thursday and Friday. No headline-making cold
weather anytime soon.
ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: 18 below at Presque Isle, Maine this morning
and -40 at Chandalar Lake, Alaska...Southern California and Arizona an
unusual amount of rain last several weeks...lots of flash-flooding over the
weekend in Arizona, especially in places like Cottonwood (where we
honeymooned many moons ago)...as much as 7.09 inches of rain at Horsethief
Basin (gotta love that name) and 6.06 at Crown King...15 to 25 inches of new
snow forecast for the higher elevations of the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains
of North and NE Utah.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Because of the serious illness of my
wife's sister in Coos Bay, Oregon, Little Miss Molly and I will be alone all
week...don't know if I can handle that...she has been going from
room-to-room frequently searching for the missing person...she did not get
much sleep last night...already had two half-mile walks today and will have
two more...she will keep me healthy...three play sessions also...on our
first walk, she did not want to come back home. I made the mistake of
saying, "Molly, let's go see Mommy." She ran down off the walking track at
breakneck speed, pushed the back door open by herself and raced through the
house looking for "Mommy." She seized my recliner and slept there most of
the night. I got up briefly at 2 o'clock and found Molly slowly walking
through the house. I will bend a little to keep her happy this week. Life
goes on regardless of the amount of sleep. We love life!
