...Rain on the Way...

GOOD MORNING! IF you think yesterday was nice, you will really love today's
weather. Skies should start out mostly sunny, with cloudiness slowly
increasing during the day. By evening, skies should be completely cloudy.
Temperatures today will rise into the middle 60s.

TUESDAY WEATHER: The increasing clouds will be due to a developing storm
system to the west of Alabama. By late tonight, a warm front will be moving
out of the Gulf of Mexico. Rain and some rumbles of thunder will be
approaching the western sections of Alabama after midnight. This rain will
overspread the state slowly, so we may not see rain until after sunrise
tomorrow here in Birmingham. By 6 a.m. Tuesday, our low pressure system
will be located in northern Mississippi, heading northeastward. It will
push a cold front and an associated squall line into the state during the
afternoon and evening hours.

SEVERE THREAT?: Enough instability and speed shear may develop on Tuesday
to produce the threat of severe thunderstorms. Because of the
unidirectional nature of the upper level winds, the main threat will be from
damaging winds. The extent of severe weather is hard to determine just yet.
Later forecasts will be able to resolve the issue better.

REST OF THE WEEK: The front should sweep through early on Wednesday
leaving light rain and blustery conditions. Skies should begin to clear
Wednesday night. Temperatures will be in the 30s by Thursday morning. Be
reminded that we are still looking for our first freeze, at least officially
at the Birmingham Airport. Minimum readings are forecast to be in the 30s
Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Our latest first freeze is December 5,
1921.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake off the coast of the
island of Hawaii produced a tsunami that killed 2 campers and injured
another 19 at Halape Park. The first tsunami-generated wave was only 1.5
meters high, but the second was 7.9 meters and swept many of the campers
away.
