GOOD AFTERNOON: This afternoon's forecast package is coming to you from the
first annual Storm Alert Xtreme event at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention
Complex. We hope to make this an annual event with national severe weather
experts and other notable speakers.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: Hey! Don't forget to turn your clocks back before
bedtime tonight!

Considerable cloudiness has been covering much of the area on this Saturday,
but clearing has been noted over northwestern sections. This trend of
increasing sunshine will rapidly work its way southeastward for the
remainder of the day, allowing most areas to see at least some sunshine.

A strong southwesterly flown is transporting moist air into Alabama from the

southwest. Those southwesterly winds are fairly strong, averaging some 8-16
mph and occasionally gusting to over 20 mph at times. The proximity of a
cold front to our northwest is combining with the moisture advection to
produce the clouds. That front is located back over Arkansas this afternoon
and is expected to slide into North Alabama tonight or tomorrow. The
moisture, the front and a little bit of daytime heating will be sufficient
to set off widely scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and
again on Sunday. They may be a little more scattered than widely scattered
tomorrow. Temperatures will continue on the warm side, with daytime
readings both days near 80 and lows in the 60s.

NEW WORK WEEK: As we head toward Monday, the upper air pattern will begin
to amplify and a trough of low pressure to the west of Alabama will begin to
dig our way. Low pressure will form at the surface to our west by Sunday
night and start moving slowly to the northeast. Ahead of this front,
convection will form and a line of storms will move slowly to the east. The
bad news is that the rain may move into Alabama early on Tuesday morning,
Election Day. The good news is that if it arrives then, there will be less
of a chance for severe weather. We will continue to monitor this system
carefully as it does have the possibility to produce strong to severe
storms. Indications are that the weather may move through pretty quickly on
Tuesday, with rain ending during the afternoon hours. Wednesday will feature
markedly cooler conditions with a brisk northerly wind. Some light rain and
clouds will hang tough across the area on Wednesday, but high pressure will
build into Alabama starting on Wednesday night. This will mean fine weather
for Thursday. A reinforcing shot of cooler air will arrive late on Friday,
but that system should be mostly dry, with only a slight chance of a shower.

DONORA SMOG DISASTER: Autumn high pressure over the Appalachian Mountains
in Pennsylvania generally produces fine, fair weather. But the inversion it
creates can also trap pollutants in the lower levels of the atmosphere. The
high concentration of heavy industry in the post-war Monongahela Valley of
Pennsylvania combined with such a stagnant air mass to produce a deadly
toxic smog event that ended on this date. The pollutions led to the deaths
of at least twenty two people in the town of Donora, Pennsylvania. Nearly
half the residents of the town suffered respiratory problems.
