SOME DRENCHING RAIN: It sure has been a busy, busy time in the weather
office since late yesterday-almost as busy as the Ivan event. This is a
little early for our secondary severe weather season, which is mostly in
November and the first half of December, but it sure served as a good
practice run.
Very heavy amounts of rain fell over a wide area overnight and today.
Showers and storms were still numerous, especially across Central and North
Alabama this afternoon. More strong ones were forming over Mississippi and
marching down the pike directly toward us. Two tornado watched covered a
good part of the state this afternoon. The one for West Central and SW
Alabama goes until 7:00 p.m. We think thunderstorms will continue locally
severe into the evening hours with the showers and storms diminishing late
tonight.
Late yesterday, several tornadoes were sighted in NW Alabama and there were
several injuries in a mobile home area north of Florence. Trees and power
lines came down in a number of communities. Scattered wind damage also
occurred today, mostly to trees and power lines. An additional problem was
flash flooding. Even though it has been dry lately, the rain came down in
buckets flooding some roads and streets. By early this afternoon, 5.95
inches had fallen in Haleyville and they will get a lot more. Cullman
reported 3.57 inches and nearly 3 inches at Smith Dam and Blountsville.
Jasper had 3.49 inches and Trussville 2.20. To the north, some very heavy
rain fell in places like Nashville, Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati.
Nearly 4 inches in some of those areas.
DOWN THE ROAD FOR CENTRAL ALABAMA: If you can make your way through a lot
of showers and storms for the remainder of today and until late tonight, it
looks better. We only expect a few showers and storms tomorrow and then
mostly sunny dry weather Thursday and Friday. A few showers may show up
again Saturday night. We were in rain cooled air this afternoon with some
temperatures as low as the 60s, but for the next several days the
temperature should soar to the lower 80s.
MY THOUGHTS: Not much sleep in the last 24 hours. I just have to figure out
a way to get my coffee intravenously...99 in Laredo was the hot spot
yesterday...this morning's coldest was 23 at Berlin, New Hampshire.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I had to totally ignore Molly again for the
last 24 hours, but she seemed to understand. However, every time I went form
my weather office to the kitchen for another cup of Maxwell House, she would
look up at me with those bright eyes wanting to play. I played kick ball
with her just a few minutes and then picked her up and loved her. I told her
I would make it up to her again later and she seemed to understand. I don't
get tense during severe weather, but if I did, I could cuddle with Molly a
few minutes and all the tension would quickly disappear. Life goes on.
