...More Showers and Storms Today...

GOOD MORNING! It turned out to be a stormy Friday afternoon across North Alabama with numerous showers and thunderstorms. Wind damage was reported at Brilliant, up in Marion County shortly after 2 p.m. and then at Chelsea in Shelby County just before 5 p.m. There was even a public report of a rain-wrapped tornado just west of Skyline in Jackson County at 3:33 p.m. A few severe thunderstorm warnings as well as a couple of tornado warnings were necessary. An approaching upper level disturbance helped to enhance wind shear over Alabama as numerous storms formed in a moist and unstable environment.

THE FORECAST: A cold front is slowly sagging toward North Alabama this morning. Its presence will be sufficient to spark additional showers and storms across the area again today. Most areas will see rain again today. Rain chances will diminish tonight, but there will still be chance of showers and storms on Sunday, just a lesser one as the front hangs up to our north. That front will be around in a weak state into the early part of the week, but rain chances will subside to normal summer levels.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: On Friday morning, August 21, 1992, Tropical Storm Andrew was located a little under 500 miles north of Puerto Rico, moving west northwest. The storm was slowly strengthening under favorable upper air conditions and was forecast to become a hurricane within 24 hours. The official forecast brought the storm to the east of the northern Bahamas by the following Monday morning, and to Florida on Tuesday or Wednesday. By the afternoon, Emergency Management Officials across Florida were told that nothing should happen during the weekend, letting their guard down.

INTO THE EYE OF CHARLEY: We will feature the eyewitness reports of three storm chasers who ventured into the middle of last week’s Hurricane Charley in southwestern Florida, including our good friend John Walker. Check it out starting with today’s Weather Talk.
