...Showers and Storms Return...
The weekend will get off to a wet start for Alabamians. A deep plume of
tropical moisture will be in place for the next 48 hours, and we will
forecast occasional showers and thunderstorms through tomorrow. There will
be some breaks in the rain, but a shower or storm will be possible at just
about any time. Some heavy rain is possible; in fact we believe some places
could see over two inches of rain between now and midday Sunday.
A few strong storms are also possible, but a big organized severe weather
event is not likely due to weak wind fields at the surface and aloft.
The last few computer model runs are holding the dry air up to the north of
Alabama, so we will maintain the chance of rain into Sunday statewide. Looks
like most of the showers by Monday of next week will be down across the
southern half of the state.
BAMA SHAKER: A magnitude 3.5 earthquake occurred in Shelby county late
yesterday at 6:51 p.m. The quake was centered 6 miles northwest of
Montevallo, near Pea Ridge. The quake was felt from McCalla to Hoover, but
no damage was reported.
AIR QUALITY: Birmingham's air quality index yesterday was 132, which is
considered unhealthy for sensitive groups (due to ozone). Moderate air
quality is expected today thanks to clouds and showers.
THE TROPICS: The Atlantic basin has become very quiet. Tropical Storm
Danielle is nearly stationary in the north Atlantic and hanging on for dear
life.
A STRING OF RECORDS: In Mobile, they tied or broke the daily record low on
six consecutive days, from August 13-18, something that has never happened
in the Port City before.
