CAN’T GET RID OF THE RAIN: I am sitting in for Bill Murray, who normally does our weekend editions. May I call your attention to his WeatherTalk story today and two more that will follow Sunday and Monday. It’s a very interesting testimonial from some storm chasers who rode out Hurricane Charley in the worst possible area.

Now back to the weather at hand. Looks like scattered showers and storms are going to be with us well into next week. There will be variations from day to day concerning how many storms and the amounts of rain. This afternoon they were rather numerous across Central Alabama—most of them from about Demopolis and Montgomery southward. However, other storms were moving ESE across North Alabama. Bottom line: most communities will have a good chance of getting wet for the remainder of this afternoon and tonight. Some areas will get locally heavy rain. We still don’t see any excessive heat for the next 5 to 7 days. The Birmingham area may be moving toward about the fourth coolest August on record.

Lots of showers and storms Friday afternoon and evening. A few of the heavier rainfall amounts:
2.23 inches in Hackleburg
2.15 in Evergreen
2.06 at Hollins (Clay County)
2.28 in Trussville

WATCHING THE CARIBBEAN AGAIN: A tropical wave moving westward through the Central Caribbean. Clouds and storms have increased. In the next 24 to 48 hours, winds aloft will become a little more favorable for tropical development. By that time, it will be over the Western Caribbean. Please, please don’t get into the Gulf of Mexico and grow into another hurricane.

A DEEP FREEZE IN AUGUST! The National Weather Service in Minneapolis says that Minnesota may be going through one of the coolest summers on record. You won’t believe this temperature, but it was a bitter cold 20 this morning at Embarrass in the northern part of that state. That is the coldest temperature ever recorded in all of Minnesota in all of August. That is very significant. In fact, that is the third significant freeze in that area this month.

A FEW RAINFALL NOTES: in Western Mississippi, Vicksburg had 3.96 inches of rain overnight...nearly 3 inches inundated Pittsburgh and Harrisburg...the 1.47 inches of rain in Mobile yesterday means they have now received 10.19 inches in the last 3 weeks. Now their total for the year so far is 53.49. That is about the normal amount for an entire year in Birmingham!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Working extra hours yesterday due to a severe thunderstorm watch, so had to neglect little Miss Molly. She always lets me know if she is not getting enough attention. So, after we went on our late night walk, she came back inside and had a bona fide energy explosion. She got four of her balls and was chasing all four at the same time. She has a cloth ball that she grabs and shakes vigorously. I would think her little brain looks like scrambled eggs...she was running all over the house at break neck speed bouncing off the back of the couch and two other chairs like they were trampolines. I had to sit and laugh and laugh. Life goes on.
