SHOWERS AND STORMS MOVING IN: Already early today there was some heavy rain
over NW Alabama. We have a report from a TVA rain gauge in Franklin County
of 2.91 inches in the community of Dime. Russellville got 1.35 inches and
parts of Northern Marion County over 2 inches. After a break much of this
morning, showers and thunderstorms were increasing this afternoon. Some were
developing over the state and more numerous ones were approaching from
Mississippi. Some communities will get locally heavy rain through tonight
and Saturday. We think the showers and storms will be fewer in number on
Sunday and only a slight chance on Monday. A "cool" front is going to try to
push into this area, but latest indications are that it will fizzle
somewhere north of the Birmingham area. With all the clouds and showers, our
high temperatures over the weekend will be in the mid 80s.
TROPICAL NOTES: Danielle is a tough lady. She was still holding on to
tropical storm status as she drifted north in the Eastern Atlantic and no
threat to land. Elsewhere, very little going on. The Gulf of Mexico is
quiet. It is a good thing we don't have a tropical storm in the Gulf,
because there is plenty of nutrition there. The sea surface temperature at a
data buoy 300 miles south of Panama City was a very warm 87. Hurricanes like
that like a kid loves ice cream. We should also be thankful that Earl did
not become a hurricane. He moved westward too fast and too far south and
went over land in Central America...we have some more information on just
how bad Hurricane Charley was in Florida. It appears that there will be a
20% loss to the citrus industry this year. About 115 thousand acres of fruit
groves were damaged in three counties. We also have some peak wind gusts to
report. At Punta Gorda Airport, the peak gust was 109 mph. At the Charlotte
County Airport, winds reached 160 mph and at the Charlotte County Medical
Center 173 mph. The storm surge did not develop nearly as much as expected.
One of the highest reported was 6 feet at Ft. Myers Beach.
FRIDAY WRAP UP: Way too much rain in parts of Texas and Louisiana. In the
last 24 hours, 7.20 inches at Evant, Texas...USA cold spot this morning was
Thief River Falls, Minnesota with 30 (love that name)...in the last couple
of days, temperatures have been as low as 23 in extreme northern Minnesota,
so their growing season has come to an end and it's only August.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: If my little Miss Molly could be the mascot
for a submarine crew, they could save money and not even need sonar. Lately
I have tried to pull a fast one on Miss Molly and tippy-toed ever so quietly
from my office to the kitchen to get some more Maxwell House. Despite being
sound asleep, her head popped up like a cork and she watched my every
step...she is my shadow...my monitor...she is almost two years old. Her IQ
is climbing rapidly, while mine is going downhill...she slept until 10 this
morning, absolutely unheard of...I blame it on Daylight Saving Time...I
blame everything I can on that but life goes on and it is always enjoyable.
