THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: As we look out across the vast North American
weatherscape this afternoon, we are envious of the chilly rain and
temperatures in the 50s in western Nebraska and the scattered frost this
morning in Upper Michigan. We're not envious, however, of the daybreak
temperature of 90 in Phoenix and 86 in Las Vegas, where the humidity is so
low that your throat feels like leather.

Let's come back home to Alabama where we are dealing with hot temperatures
and a lot of haze and a Code Orange Alert for air quality. A few storms may
develop over extreme north Alabama later this afternoon and possibly one or
two as far south as Central Alabama. Over the weekend, we expect a low
pressure area to develop to the east of Alabama and move ever so slowly
toward the west and SW. this will bring us improving chances of some showers
and thunderstorms for the next several days. Some drier air may be pulled
down into north Alabama, almost cutting off the showers for the extreme
north on Sunday. Probably the best chance of showers and storms for central
Alabama will be Monday and Tuesday. This will help hold down our high
temperatures to the upper 80s early in the week.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Lots of cloudiness and thunderstorms over the SE Bahamas
northward to about halfway between Bermuda and Florida is associated with an
upper level disturbance. Two surface low pressure areas may merge as upper
level winds become more favorable for development over the next day or so.

An air force recon plane is going to investigate this Saturday afternoon, if
necessary.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Can't get away from the chance of scattered
thunderstorms each along the Alabama-NW Florida coast. The best chance will
be Monday and Tuesday. Regardless, there will still be some good intervals
of sunshine with high temperatures hanging out in the lower 90s. The sea
surface temperature at Dauphin Island is an unusually warm 88. Good thing
there's not a hurricane in the Gulf, because it would thrive on water
temperatures that high.

CLEARING OFF MY DESK: Scattered frost in the middle of summer? It was 34
this morning at Clarksburg in Upper Michigan-8 degrees colder than the
lowest in Alaska...the Birmingham rainfall deficiency is creeping back
toward 5 inches. One year ago today, we had already received about 45 inches
of rain for the year-12 inches ahead of this year.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure am glad to have my e-mail working again.
It was not the internet provider's fault. Instead, two settings in the dark,
mysterious, scary inner workings of my computer. My computer whiz son-in-law
solved it in only 15 minutes around 1 o'clock this morning. All of this to
say that little Miss Molly had a very disruptive night of sleep. She was out
walking after midnight and she and I had a long one hour post-midnight play
session with her plastic bone. Our morning walk was totally uneventful until
the very last. As we came down off the walking track into our backyard,
Molly jumped a grasshopper and took off like a Blue Angel jet. It caught me
by surprise and her leash wrapped around my big, tall heavy copper rain gage
jerking it over onto the concrete. It sounded like a metal building
collapsing. Molly bolted and took off as far as the leash would let her. She
then turned around and glared at me like I did it on purpose for punishment.
But life goes on.
