...Cold Orange Ozone Alert...

The combination of summer heat, light wind, and no rain means more air
quality problems for Birmingham today, and a code orange ozone alert remains
in effect for Jefferson and Shelby counties. Yesterday's AQI (air quality
index) was 123, which is considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups", and
today could be just as bad. Consider avoiding drive-thoughs during the
middle of the day, refueling your car after 6:00 p.m., and setting the
thermostat a few degrees higher today.

THE WEATHER STORY: While a rogue shower or storm is not totally out of the
question this afternoon, we believe most Alabama communities will remain dry
today with hazy sunshine and temperatures rising into the low 90s.
Moisture deepens a bit tomorrow into the weekend, which means higher
humidity and the return of scattered showers and storms during the afternoon
hours. A front approaching from the north should fizzle out before reaching
us over the weekend.

A stronger surface front could bring an enhanced chance of rain or storms
around here by about Tuesday of next week.

TROPICS: A strong tropical wave continues to move through the Caribbean,
and there is some chance it could become a tropical depression soon. An Air
Force hurricane hunter is scheduled to investigate at some point today. The
latest package of tropical models continues to suggest a steady westward
motion, with the system ultimately going into Mexico or Central America.

SUMMER HEAT: Sizzling summer heat continues in Phoenix, where the high
yesterday was 111 degrees. Death Valley, CA was the hottest spot in the
nation with 122. Alabama's hottest city was Montgomery with 94.
