...Afternoons Get Hotter...

GOOD WEATHER; BAD AIR: We have a code orange ozone alert for the Birmingham
metro area today, meaning air quality is expected to be unhealthy for
sensitive groups of people, like those with asthma. On ozone alert days like
this, consider: turning up your thermostat to conserve energy, walking or
riding a bike when possible, refuel your vehicle after dark, and carpool
with your co-workers. Yesterday's air quality index in Birmingham was 105,
which is in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Our forecast package will highlight a gradual increase in
heat and humidity over the next few days across Alabama, with afternoon
temperatures peaking in the 91 to 95 degree range in most places. We will
maintain a generally dry forecast through Friday, with the risk of any one
spot seeing an afternoon storm less than 10 percent.

THE WEEKEND: Another surface front will approach Alabama by Saturday, but
this time upper air winds probably won't allow the front to push through the
state. We will forecast a few storms on Saturday and Sunday, but with only
limited upper air dynamics they should be widely scattered, and mostly
during the peak of the daytime heating process. Another words, pretty
routine weather for mid to late July with highs in the 88 to 92 degree
range.

TROPICS: A rather strong tropical wave continues to move through the eastern
Caribbean this morning. While winds aloft are not particularly favorable for
development, now, we still think there is a chance this system could develop
into a tropical depression before the week is over. The system is moving
steadily to the west at about 25 mph.
