...Sun, Heat and Storms...
If our temperature forecasts verify, the hottest two days so far this summer
are ahead for Alabama. We are projecting a high of 94 today, and 96
tomorrow, with heat index (the way it feels due to the high humidity) values
exceeding 100 at times. But, we really shouldn't be surprised since this is
mid-July in Alabama.
Like yesterday, afternoon showers and storms will be an issue through
tomorrow, and the stronger storms will produce plenty of lightning, gusty
winds, and torrential rain. At the ABC 33/40 studio in Riverchase yesterday,
we measured 1.48" of rain, with most of that coming in about 45 minutes.
Winds gusted to 60 mph in Walker county at Curry, and a tree was blown into
an 18 wheeler along U.S. 78 near Graysville. At one point 8,600 people in
the Birmingham metro area had no power due to the storms.
DRIER AIR? A rather strong surge of dry continental air for mid-summer will
approach Alabama early Thursday, and the upper air pattern seems to favor
that dry air moving into the northern half of the state during the day. So,
we expect any storms Thursday afternoon to be mainly south of Birmingham.
The chance of any one spot getting wet on Friday and Saturday will be rather
small as the drier air continues stay in place. Then, by Sunday we go back
in the "soup", with higher humidity values and better coverage of scattered
afternoon storms.
OZONE: A code yellow forecast for Jefferson and Shelby counties today,
meaning air quality should be moderate.
HODGEPODGE: A whopping 4.65" of rain fell yesterday in Philadelphia. Hottest
place in the nation was Death Valley, CA with 120 degrees. Gotta love that
"dry heat"!
