... Scattered Storms Return...

As moisture deepens across Alabama, and a weak surface front approaches from
the north, we expect to see some thunderstorms on radar this afternoon for
the first time in five days. The most numerous storms should be across the
Tennessee Valley of extreme north Alabama, but some could form as far south
as the I-20 corridor.

THE WEEKEND: The front to the north of Alabama should fizzle out, leaving us
in a moderately unstable and moist airmass, so we will pretty much roll with
the typical mid-summer forecast tomorrow and Sunday (partly sunny, hot, and
humid with scattered afternoon storms). Some of the model data is hinting at
a surface low pressure area forming over southeast Alabama, which tries to
pull drier air into the northern part of the state on Sunday. If this
happens storms could less numerous on Sunday afternoon.

Early next week, the surface low elongates into a trough and slowly drifts
westward, which should mean an increase in the number of showers and storms
on Monday and Tuesday.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: A code orange air quality alert remains in effect for
Jefferson and Shelby counties today. The primary problem is actually not
ground level ozone, but particulate pollution. Yesterday's AQI (air quality
index) was 138, the worst air quality day for Birmingham so far this year.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend,
with the daily risk of a passing storm in scattered spots. Temperatures will
peak around 90, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab
late yesterday was a warm 88 degrees.

A WET DAY: Indianapolis was soaked with 3.56" of rain yesterday.
