A code orange ozone alert continued for the Birmingham metro area today due
to a lot of hazy sunshine, hotter temperatures and light winds. It is still
not unusually hot for July, but temperatures will edge up a bit for Friday
into the lower 90s.
We will also have some moisture feeding back into our area. Look for widely
scattered, mostly afternoon, thunderstorms Friday-increasing some on
Saturday. We're also looking toward the north for another front that wants
to make its way south. We're not sure how far south it will go. Some of the
pesky models send it all the way to the coast. The more likely scenario is
for it to stall and lose its identity in central Alabama. Therefore, on
Sunday the scattered showers and storms could be limited to areas east and
south of Birmingham. A low pressure area is also expected to develop over SE
Alabama, NW Florida and south Florida. This may give us a better chance of
showers and storms on Monday.
TROPICAL WEATHER: That reconnaissance flight into the tropical wave in the
Caribbean was canceled this morning because the system showed no signs of
growing. Later today that disturbed weather area weakened more and now the
National Hurricane Center does not expect it to develop.
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR: While we are suffering a bit with the heat and
humidity in our area, folks in Upper Michigan will be pulling out their
sweaters this afternoon. Temperatures will drop into the mid 50s with north
winds up to 25 mph. By daybreak tomorrow, they will experience some
temperatures as low as 38-40. In Chicago, where it was in the low 90s with a
severe thunderstorm watch this afternoon, it will get no higher than 72
Friday with much lower humidity and brisk north winds.
THURSDAY THOUGHTS: Death Valley was again the hottest spot in the country
Wednesday with a blistering 122. What few people that are there take that in
stride...some cold temperatures this morning included: 39 in Stanley, Idaho;
36 in Deadhorse, Alaska; and 111 below zero at Vostok, Antarctica where the
wind chill was an amazing 145 below zero!..3.47 inches of rain in
Indianapolis overnight, 3.85 inches in Goshen, Indiana and 2.41 in Omaha.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Occasionally my little Miss Molly cannot
resist embarking on another crime spree. I bought a new pair of trousers.
Before they could be put away, she had them in the floor and chewed off all
of the tags. Then, she found a bag with a huge ball of new yarn. By the time
she got through with that, big clumps of the yarn were scattered across the
living area. When we vocally scolded her, she looked at us as if to say,
"Well, what do you expect? I'm only a little puppy and I can take only so
much temptation." I guess it could be compared to me having a box of brown
sugar/cinnamon Pop Tarts, a banana moon pie and a Buffalo Rock (my favorite
soft drink) and expected not to partake. Life goes steadily on and I'm glad
it's never dull.
