NICE BREAK FROM JULY HEAT: It's not too bad out across the countryside
again this afternoon as temperatures were mostly in the 80s and the humidity
quite a bit lower than what we are supposed to have on a July afternoon.

It's going to be gradually getting hotter over the next few days as high
temperatures edge upward to between 92 and 94. The atmosphere is still
rather dry and we're not going to mention any rain until a slight chance
about Friday afternoon. It looks like Saturday will be our better chance of
getting some scattered showers and thunderstorms. It was another nice cool
morning and there was a touch of autumn all the way down to Selma and
Montgomery. One of the lowest temperatures this morning was 58 at
Hackneyville in Tallapoosa County. It was 59 in Ft. Payne and Ashville, 60
in Cottondale, 61 in Talladega, Cullman and Scottsboro and 62 in Fayette,
Heflin and Wadley. In places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Livingston and
Jasper, it was 64.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A fairly active tropical wave over the eastern Caribbean
was wasting no time moving westward at 20-25 mph with showers and gusty
winds. The National Hurricane Center thinks that the upper winds are
unfavorable enough to prevent tropical development any time soon.

AIR QUALITY: It's the same old story-another code yellow for today, which
means moderate air quality.

DID YOU KNOW? That in an average year, Baghdad gets only 4 to 8 inches of
rain. In Saudi Arabia, Riyadh only gets about 2 inches a year. As a point of
comparison, Birmingham receives about 54 inches.

LOOKING FAR AND WIDE: 120 in Death Valley was the hottest in the USA
Monday. They will stay that way much of this week. Phoenix had 110 and they
should have 110 to 111 for the next several days...USA lows this morning
included 39 at Deadhorse, Alaska and 46 at Lake Tahoe...at the
Amundson-Scott station in Antarctica, it was 101 below with a wind chill of
140 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is so much fun to wake up with little Miss
Molly. She and I both awoke at 5:15 this morning. She yawns for 5 minutes
and stretches and groans. I immediately got up to call my internet tech
support in Louisville, because my e-mail had been down since yesterday.
Almost immediately Molly began to ring the little bell on the back door more
vigorously than ever. It sounded like the popsicle truck coming down the
street or Santa landing on the roof with his sleigh. The guy in Louisville
finally said, "Is someone ringing your doorbell this early?" I replied
without any explanation, "No, that's my little puppy ringing the back
doorbell because she needs to go outside." He replied, "What!!!" I hope you
were out as early as Molly and I. If not, you missed a terrific sunrise. It
appeared as a huge orange basketball rising through the fog and haze. Just
another interesting start to the day in my tiny corner. Life goes on.
