A NICE WAY TO WAKE UP: Temperatures were 8 to 10 degrees cooler than they
have been on recent mornings. That cool front that we advertised for days
pushed all the way off the Gulf Coast. This afternoon, dew points across
north Alabama were in the mid 60s, meaning that it was fairly comfortable
July afternoon.

I can think of several places I would like to be today, such as driving up
the Paint Rock River valley or hiking on the boardwalk trail that leads
into the woods at DeSoto State Park. Let's celebrate these low temperatures:

58 in Valley Head
59 in Ft. Payne, DeSoto State Park and Cullman
60 at High Top
61 in Huntsville, Decatur, Meridianville
62 in Pinson and Ashland
63 in Russellville and Bankhead National Forest
64 in Trussville, Clanton, Jasper, Mentone
65 in Anniston, Birmingham, Guntersville

Lows tonight will be just as nice-possibly a degree or so cooler. Afternoons
will gradually heat up a few degrees, but we don't see any risk of rain
until late in the week.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A vigorous tropical wave was 275 miles east of the
southern Windward Islands moving quickly toward the west at 25 mph. While
there is no sign of tropical development at this time, there is some
potential later.

AIR QUALITY: Code yellow again today for the Birmingham metro area meaning
moderate air quality.

MONDAY NOTES: Some pleasant temperatures around the South this morning,
including 49 atop Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina and 40 atop Mt. LeConte near
Gatlinburg...the USA lows: 46 at Lake Tahoe and 35 at Barrow,
Alaska...Sunday's cooking spot was Death Valley with 118...something very
interesting in Alabama weather. On this date in 1997, Hurricane Danny
reached the Alabama coast with gusts to 80 mph. Much more important,
however, was the fact that he stalled and dumped some unbelievable rainfall.

There was 36.71 inches at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, including an
incredible 26 inches in 7 hours. A four-story condominium under construction
at Gulf Shores was leveled. At the Marriott Grand Hotel in Point Clear, a
wedding was conducted even though the power was out and one of the
bridesmaids could not get to the hotel.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was determined not to let little Miss Molly
sleep late this morning. I got her out and walking at sunrise while there
was a touch of autumn in the air. It was about 62 degrees and even the birds
were chirping with more enthusiasm. About halfway through the walk, one of
those singing mockingbirds dive-bombed Molly. It so happened that she was
right in the middle of doing her "business," so she took off after the bird.
I had to rein her in and backtrack about 15 yards to scoop up you know what.
I refuse to leave any MP (Molly poop)...that little blue scoop has become as
much a part of my life as Matt Dillon's rifle or John Dillinger's machine
gun...Molly is a nice little diplomat. Even total strangers who don't know
me from Adam's yard dog will wave when Miss Molly is around. I wave back
with my little blue scoop. I hope they don't mind. Life goes on.
