...Typical Summer-Time Weekend...

GOOD MORNING! After watching Gods and Generals and Cold Mountain this week,
I felt like I was a Petersburg or Fredericksburg or Chancellorsville as I
listened to the distant boom of thunder last evening from a storm several
miles away over southeastern Jefferson County. It thundered heavily in the
distance for well over an hour in Trussville around 7 p.m. It must have
been what distant artillery fire sounded like during the Civil War.

WEEKEND WEATHER: The storm that produced the thunder to the south of
Trussville was a small one and very isolated. That is going to continue to
be the case throughout the weekend thanks to surface high pressure that is
centered over Northwest Alabama and a large upper level high that is
centered over the southeastern United States. The high will retrograde, or
drift westward, during the next few days. Our upper level winds will become
more northwesterly with time, and this will spell some very warm weather
here in Alabama. Temperatures today and Sunday will warm to 90 degrees or
just above. Monday may see highs even a couple of degrees hotter.

Rain chances will be slim over the next three days with the high pressure in
control. A few areas will get lucky a pick up one of those afternoon
storms. Any storms that do form will be heavy, producing very dangerous
lightning and heavy rainfall amounts.

HOW 'BOUT NEXT WEEK? Indications are that the high pressure will remain in
control for much of the coming week. Rain chances will remain near the
climatological levels for this time of year, meaning about a 1 in 3 chance
on any given day through Thursday. Temperatures will be warm through the
week, with highs in the lower 90s. The ridge will begin to break down
toward the end of the week, allowing a front to approach Alabama from the
north on Thursday. The front will increase rain chances at week's end,
especially on Friday. By that time, temperatures will fall back into the
upper 80s.
