From the mailbag (a 7:15 e-mail last evening): I live off of U.S. 31 and
Lorna Road in Hoover and the lightning was the strongest and sharpest that I
have seen in quite a while. I grew up in Miami so I know lightning. It was
so close that a flash made by portable phone ring and the hair on my legs
stood up for a second-quite a static discharge.

The 33/40 weather watcher for Pelham was also in Hoover at the time and he
saw a bolt of lightning strike the same sweetgum tree twice in 15 minutes.
When he got back home to Pelham, he found they had received no rain and
Pelham has only received 0.02 this month. But the 33/40 weather watcher in
Hoover reported a whopping 3.27 inches of rain from that slow-moving
thunderstorm. At the 33/40 studios in Riverchase there was 1.66.

Quite a few other places got locally heavy rain yesterday, but we believe
that thunderstorms will thin out a great deal over the next few days. With
fewer storms and more sun, the afternoon temperatures will heat up to the
low to mid 90s over the weekend and early next week.

TROPICAL WEATHER: That small low pressure area that developed ESE of
Bermuda is approaching cooler waters. The National Hurricane Center now
thinks there is little chance of any development. In another area, clouds
and showers have increased over the NW Caribbean and parts of the Yucatan
Peninsula because of a westward moving tropical wave. Additional development
unlikely.

Incidentally, on this date in 1979, Hurricane Bob was born in the Gulf of
Mexico. He had the honor of being the first ever male hurricane.

AIR QUALITY: We're still under a code yellow, which means moderate air
quality.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: The inevitable scattered afternoon thunderstorms will
occur each day-about a one in three chance-but there will be good intervals
of sunshine. Highs mostly between 90 and 93 along the beaches and mid 90s
inland. The surf temperature at Dauphin Island is a warm 86.

SWEEPING OFF MY DESK: A sub freezing 27 was the lowest in the USA this
morning at the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It was 34 in
Barrow, Alaska...Death Valley had the hottest yesterday with 114...on this
date in 1968, 15.68 inches of rain flooded Columbus-that's the most ever in
24 hours for the entire State of Mississippi.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Boy, was it hot this morning when little Miss
Molly and I took our early morning walk. She usually wants to lie down in
the wet grass and cool off. This morning I wanted to do that. It was great
to hear a variety of birds singing again. I thought they had left us. About
three mockingbirds followed us part way around the track seemingly to
serenade little Miss Molly. At the far end of the walking track, an 18
wheeler load of sod was being unloaded. A workman dropped a big heavy tool
on the pavement. Molly jumped straight up and took off. I just never know.
However, I am now a skillful "driver" with little Miss Molly so, again, I
avoided whiplash. Haven't had to use Ben Gay ointment in months! Life goes
on.
