...Sun, Heat and Storms...

Today should be rather typical mid-summer day for Alabama, with morning
sunshine, scattered afternoon storms, and a good serving of heat and
humidity. The storms should not be as numerous as recent days as the air
becomes more stable. In fact, the chance of any one spot seeing a passing
afternoon shower or storm tomorrow and Saturday will be quite small as an
upper ridge builds over the state.

As the showers thin out, the heat will crank up a notch or two over the
weekend, with highs in the 90 to 95 degree range for most spots. We can't
rule out an afternoon shower or storm on Saturday and Sunday (this is July,
after all), but they should be few and far between.

YESTERDAY'S STORMS: Some street flooding was reported in Tuscaloosa late
yesterday, and our weathernet station in the eastern part of town measured
1.52" of rain. For the second day in a row a number of reports of tree and
power line damage were received from a number of Alabama counties.

SHORTER DAYS: The sunset time today for Birmingham is exactly 8:00 p.m. CDT,
one minute shorter than the sunset time at the summer solstice. The amount
of daylight will continue to gradually grow smaller until the winter
solstice on December 21.

TROPICS: A few good looking tropical waves have emerged off the coast of
Africa over the past week, but they have fallen apart in the eastern
Atlantic due to cool water temperatures. The Gulf of Mexico remains quiet.

POTPORRI: Another preview of fall yesterday around the northern Great Lakes,

where the high in Green Bay, WI was only 62. Wilmington, DE picked up 1.87"
of rain.
