THE ALABAMA STORY: Another day when we weather humans need eyes all around
our head...or a swivel head. So much going on and so many subtle small
influences to watch for. Some cooling aloft, a big complex of storms
overnight in Oklahoma and North Texas sending outflow impulses our way and
sea breeze effects to our south. Putting all that into a pot and cooking it,
this is what we come up with:

A good chance of showers and storms for the remainder of this afternoon and
through this evening. A few may be strong and again, some folks will have
downpours and others none at all. Scattered thunderstorms also tomorrow.
After that, a thinning out of daily thunderstorms through the weekend but
there will be at least a few each day. (After all, this is July-the champion
thunderstorm month for Alabama.) On those days with fewer showers, that
sneaky old thermometer will take advantage of the extra sun and go up into
the low to mid 90s.

LAST NIGHT'S STORMS: There were scattered reports of downed trees and power
lines...a house fire from lightning in Hazel Green...viscious lightning in
numerous places...just a few of the heavier rainfall amounts:

3.10 inches in downtown Scottsboro
2.01 in NE Trussville
1.71 in Henagar
1.46 in Ashville
1.42 at Russell Cave

Numerous other communities received well over one inch. At Birmingham
Airport, there was only 0.10.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The weather is a bit nervous just SE of Bermuda but all
that should move NE. Any development will be slow. A couple of other
disturbed weather areas are way out in the Atlantic.

AIR QUALITY: Another Code Yellow (moderate air quality) for the Birmingham
Metro area.

TO COOL YOU OFF A TINY BIT: It was 109 below zero this afternoon at Vostok,
Antarctica. For the next few days, it is expected to linger around -106 with
the wind occasionally 10-13 MPH. This will send the wind chill as low as 170
below...the low for the "lower 48" this morning was 36 in Stanley,
Idaho...hottest yesterday 119 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Out walking early with my ever-present pal,
Little Miss Molly and for the second morning in a row, few, if any, birds
were singing. Maybe we are timing it wrong...they could all be around the
breakfast table enjoying their morning worms (link sausage) and bugs
(cereal)...everything so fresh this morning thanks to a whopper of a
thunderstorm last night that dumped 2.01 inches of rain at Molly's
house...Molly normally ignores thunder but that was no ordinary thunder last
night...it was the booming, crashing, window-rattling-ground-shaking kind.
Molly was scared to death...and lately she has sought refuge on top of my
desk curled up against my computer...I tried to hold her and console her as
much as I could while trying to keep up with the weather, make radio
broadcasts and still avoid my office with the big wide window as much as
possible. Life goes on even on stormy days.
