GOOD AFTERNOON! I love the afternoon package because it affords me the
opportunity to write a longer forecast discussion. More time to talk about
the tropics, history, and so on. It's a hot and humid Saturday out there
across Central Alabama, with temperatures making it to at least 90 degrees
in most locations. An intense July sun combined with few clouds is allowing
for the summery warmth. Get used to it. Warm readings will be with us for
much of the coming week. After all, it is July in Alabama.

HIGH PRESSURE: A huge ridge of high pressure covers the southeastern
quarter of the U.S., with twin domes of high pressure over the Atlantic and
over Texas. By tomorrow, the eastern bubble of high pressure will be
centered to the west of Alabama. As it moves west, it will gradually turn
our upper level winds around to the northwest, reinforcing the warm and dry
weather. This is not a northwesterly flow regime, which sometimes flings
thunderstorm complexes at us. But as we go into the upcoming week, the
upper air pattern over North America will begin to change. The high
pressure aloft will consolidate its presence over the Plains states. This
will buckle the upper flow over the eastern United States, putting the East
Coast in a northwesterly flow. What this is going to do is allow a cold
front to slide southward over the east. This front will approach Alabama on
Wednesday. It is hard to buy the idea that the models are selling: a
decent cold front sliding through much of the state by Thursday, but it will
likely increase our rain chances some on Wednesday and more on Thursday.
So, we can expect isolated storms Sunday and Monday, scattered storms on
Tuesday, a little better chance of storms on Wednesday, a good chance on
Thursday and then the forecast depend on the front's location.

THE TROPICS: The Tropical Atlantic is beginning to bubble just a bit these
days. A small low pressure system well to the east southeast of Bermuda is
poorly organized and has little chance to develop. One of the over one
hundred tropical waves that will cross the Atlantic this hurricane season is
about 500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles this afternoon. Thunderstorm
activity associated with this feature is disorganized. Another tropical wave
is moving into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. A low may form with this
system before it moves into Texas tonight and Sunday.

WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME: One place not to be during a thunderstorm: an
ammunition depot. On this date in 1926, lightning explodes an ammunition
magazine at the Naval Ammunition Depot at Lake Denmark, New Jersey. The
resulting explosion destroyed every building within a 1/2 mile radius and
debris fell as far as 25 miles away. 16 people died in the disaster and
damage totaled $70 million in what may have been the costliest lightning
bolt in United States history.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Lightning injured two boys as they were climbing down
from a tree house in which they were playing in Broward County, Florida.
They began to climb down when they heard thunder, but lightning struck the
tree as they climbed down. One boy was seriously injured as he fell on his
head.
